DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2016) – Despite RBI from senior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y./Westchester CC), sophomore Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) and freshman Nicholas Chilson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City), the Mercy College baseball team suffered a 6-3 setback to ECC opponent Dowling College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (9-18, 2-7 ECC) drop their fourth straight ECC game, while the Golden Lions (13-15, 6-3 ECC) have won seven of their last eight games.

Arcabascio and Palladino both went 2-for-5 on the day, while Chilson batted 1-for-4 to lead Mercy at the plate. Graduate student Matt Snyder (Albany, N.Y./University of Kentucky) made the start and pitched the first seven innings with two earned runs allowed to take his first loss of the season.

R.J. Going and Chris Appell led Dowling at the dish with two hits each and starter Cody McPartland tossed eight innings with one earned run given up to pick up the victory.

The Golden Lions opened up the scoring in the contest with a run in the top of the first as Tim Going led off the inning with a single before coming around to score on a Michael Rizzitello RBI single to make it 1-0. Sophomore Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) led off the bottom half of the inning for the Mavericks with a double, but was left stranded and the score was 1-0 after one inning.

Dowling added on two more runs in the top of the second after Tyler Piccolo doubled to right center to bring in a run and later scored on a wild pitch, making it 3-0. Mercy got on the board in the bottom of the second after junior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) led off the inning with a single and later came around to score on a Chilson RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1 after two innings.

The Mavericks inched closer in the bottom of the third following a Palladino RBI double down the left field line that scored senior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Binghamton), who had walked in the previous at bat, making it 3-2 after three innings.

Dowling tacked on an insurance run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2. The score remained 4-2 until the top of the eighth as both starters settled down and allowed just three hits combined from the fourth to the eighth inning. An RBI single off the bat of Rob Costanzo with two outs in the eighth gave the Golden Lions a 5-2 lead.

Hagan led off the Mercy eighth inning with a single but was left at first to keep the score at 5-2 heading to the ninth. Robert Morse produced the final run of the game for Dowling with an RBI double to right field to increase the score to 6-2.

The Mavericks rallied in the ninth with Arcabascio driving in a run to make it 6-3, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the threat and the game.

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks continue their series with Dowling on the road tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
