Arcabascio and Patterson Help Lead Baseball to Split With Dowling

Box Score 2 SHIRLEY, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2016) – Powered by three RBI on the day from sophomore Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) and freshman Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and seven shutout innings from senior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall), the Mercy College baseball team split a doubleheader against ECC foe Dowling College at Golden Lions Field on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks took game one 13-2 before falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
The Mavericks are now 10-19 and 3-8 in the conference, while the Golden Lions are 14-16 overall and 7-4 in the ECC.
Game 1: Mercy 13, Dowling 2
The opening game of the day saw Arcabascio take control of the plate as he recorded a game-high three RBI and three hits as the Mavericks took game one of the doubleheader, 13-2. The Mavericks were able to get on the board in the top of the second inning as sophomore Nick Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y./North Shore) was able to reach first on a throwing error by the Golden Lions shortstop, bringing junior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) in to score the first run of the game.
The Mavericks would be able to score twelve unanswered runs in the next five innings, with nine separate Mavericks scoring. Scoring continued in the top of the fifth inning when junior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) was able to score off of a double to left field from Sadallah. Sadallah would return home to score for the Mavericks after sophomore Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) singled through the right side. Senior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Binghamton) and Torres would score the remaining two runs of the inning off of Golden Lions errors, making it 5-0.
Arcabascio brought the Mavericks lead to 7-0 when he homered to right field in the top of the sixth inning, bringing in Daley. The Mavericks would keep the Golden Lions at zero for the remainder of the inning.
Mercy secured the win in the top of the seventh inning when they scored six runs, increasing the lead to 13-0. Freshman Nicholas Chilson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) started the scoring off in the top of the seventh when he singled out to center field, bringing Hagan in for his second run of the game. Next up, Fina singled out to left field for two RBI, bringing Chilson and senior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y./Westchester CC) home. Arcabascio had his third hit of the game, when he singled to left center field bringing Daley in for the run. Sadallah and Hagan would also hit singles for the Mavericks, bringing Fina and Arcabascio home for 13 total runs in the game.
The Golden Lions fought back in the bottom of the eighth inning when Chris Russo singled to left center field to allow R.J Going to score for Dowling. Michael Richter then doubled to right field for Dwayne Page to score the second run of the game for the Golden Lions. Mercy eventually took game one 13-2.
Patterson threw seven innings, striking out six batters and giving up no runs to pick up the win and improve to 2-4. For the Golden Lions, John Parisi threw 6 2/3 innings allowing six earned runs to take the loss.
Game 2: Dowling 4, Mercy 1
The nightcap saw the Golden Lions jump out to an early 1-0 lead after two innings following a Rob Costanzo RBI double. The Mavericks then put runners on second third with one out in the third, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. Dowling responded by putting another run on the board with Richter plating R.J. Going with an RBI single up the middle, making it 2-0 after three innings.
The Golden Lions increased their lead to 4-0 after the fourth inning on three walks, a passed ball and a single. Sadallah got the Mavericks their lone run of the game in the fifth on a single to center that scored Fina who led off the inning with a double, making it 4-1. The Mavericks would rally in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out, but a pick off and a strikeout ended the game.
Fina went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while junior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made the start and went the first 4 1/3 innings with two earned runs allowed to take the loss. Dennis Buckstein made the start for Dowling and tossed five innings of one-run ball to pick up the win, while Andrew Sesto came in and tossed two scoreless innings to earn the save.
Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow afternoon at home, as they host the Golden Lions of Dowling College for the final game of the four game spread. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
