Golino and Konyar Record an RBI as Softball Plays at Dowling

Box Score 2 SHIRLEY, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2016) – Despite an RBI from junior Katiana Golino (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and sophomore Chelsea Konyar (Halifax, Pa./Halifax), the Mercy College softball team dropped 12-6 and 6-0 decisions to ECC foe Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.
The Mavericks (17-25, 7-15 ECC) split the season series with the Golden Lions (11-25, 5-15 ECC) who have won three of four.
Game 1: Dowling 12, Mercy 6
The opening game of the day saw the two teams combine for 20 hits and ten errors. The Mavericks jumped out a 4-0 lead after their first at bat following five Dowling errors and an RBI double from Konyar. The Golden Lions got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Victoria Gallagher home run, making it 4-1 after one inning.
The score remained 4-1 heading to the third when junior Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North) led off the inning with a double and later came around to score on a Golino RBI single to make it 5-1. Dowling made it 5-2 in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from Samantha Laird.
The hosts took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth as they plated four runs on five hits, including a two-RBI double from Gallagher, giving the Golden Lions a 6-5 lead after four innings. Mercy evened the score up at 6-6 in their next at bat as freshman Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) scored off a Dowling error after walking earlier in the frame.
The Golden Lions took the lead back for good in their half of the fifth on a hit and two Mercy errors, taking an 8-6 lead. Dowling would put the game away in the sixth with four runs off of two hits and a Mavericks error to take a commanding 12-6 lead.
Gross and Konyar both went 2-for-4 in the opener, while junior Jackie Kielty (Middleboro, Mass./Dean College) pitched five innings in relief with five earned runs allowed to take the loss. Vanessa Juengerkes pitched a complete game with one earned run allowed to earn the win.
Game 2: Dowling 6, Mercy 0
After scoring six runs in the opening game, the Mavericks could only muster two hits in the nightcap. Dowling took control of the game in the bottom of the first when they plated three runs on five hits, including back-to-back RBI singles, to take a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Stevens recorded one of Mercy's two hits in the second with a double, but was left stranded. The Golden Lions concluded their scoring in the third inning with Juengerkes smacking a three-run double to right center to make it 6-0 Dowling after three innings.
Freshman Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam, N.Y./Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons) would record the Mavericks second hit in the fourth, but Mercy was held hitless for the remainder of the contest as Stephanie White tossed a complete game to pick up the win.
Salisbury made the start in the circle and pitched the first 2 1/3 innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow at home against St. Thomas Aquinas at 1 p.m.
