Box Score 2 The Mavericks fall to 14-13 overall and 5-4 in the ECC. The Spartans rise to 8-17 overall and are now 3-9 in the ECC.
Game 1: St. Thomas Aquinas 9, Mercy 8
Sailsbury led the Mavericks offensively in game two, registering the lone homerun of the game, along with two RBI. Junior Liza Ueno was also a threat at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Leading the Spartans in game one was freshman Alyssa Chelak who had three RBI, one hit, and one run in three at bats. Freshman duo Amanda Leone and Kelcy McGeehan both had two RBI and one hit.
Mercy got an early lead on game one, when they were able to record five hits and capitalize on four runs in the top of the second inning. Ueno led off the inning for the Mavericks with a single to get on base and advancing to second on a passed ball. Salisbury got the Mavericks on the board when she hit a two run homerun, bringing in Ueno. The third run of the inning would be scored by junior Janelle Wade off of an error by the Spartans pitcher. Next up, senior Amanda Gardiner grounded out to second base, moving senior Milana Gilaga to third and sophomore Marlena Marzigliano home. The Mavericks would enter the bottom of the second with a 4-0 lead.
The Spartans were not out of the game just yet, as they were able to score seven runs in their at bat in the second inning. The first run for the Spartans would come from freshman Alyssa Williams, when she was able to score on an error on the Mavericks. Freshman Alyssa Chelak would get the Spartans on a roll, as she blasted a three run home run tying the game 4-4. McGeehan would hit the second home run of the inning to bring the Spartans lead to 7-4 at the end of the second inning.
St. Thomas Aquinas was able to score two more runs in the bottom of the third inning before the Mavericks came alive offensively. Mercy was not done fighting in the top of the fourth inning as they were able to score four runs off of three errors and record three hits. Gardiner, Gilaga, Ueno, and junior Julie Gross were all able to score on errors from the Spartans in the inning. Neither team would be able to score again throughout the contest.
The Mavericks fell to the Spartans 9-8 in game one of the doubleheader.
In the circle for Mercy was junior Jackie Kielty, who pitched a total of 3.2 innings for the Mavericks. Junior Julie Sosnicki will earn the win for the Spartans, pitching a full seven innings in the contest.
Game 2: St. Thomas Aquinas 8, Mercy 7
The Mavericks put up a solid fight in game two of the doubleheader, battling it out into extra innings with the Spartans. Despite six Mavericks recording RBI, and eight Mavericks earning a hit, Mercy was not about to come out with the victory in game two.
Freshman Kaylee Stevens led the Mavericks with four hits and one RBI in game two, scoring two of the seven runs. Ueno had another stand out game as she had three hits and one RBI for Mercy. Chelak was a threat for the Spartans as she had a total of three RBI, one hit and one run.
The Mavericks got off to a slow start, when three separate Spartans hit home runs in the bottom of the second inning to start off the game. The final homerun of the inning was hit by Chelak, who hit a three run homerun, wrapping up the second inning with the Spartans having a 5-0 lead. Leone would also add a two run homerun in the bottom of the third inning to bring the Spartans lead to 7-0.
Mercy was able to fight back in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Morgan Lloyd was able to score off of an error from the Spartans. Gardiner was able to bring another run in for the Mavericks when she grounded out to first base, bringing Gilaga in for the Mavericks. Marzigliano was brought in next due to an RBI single from Stevens. Stevens would be the last to score for the Mavericks when she was able to score when freshman McCaily Cusumano was hit by a pitch, tying the score 7-7 in the top of the sixth inning.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh inning. St. Thomas Aquinas would score the winning run off of an error by the Mavericks.
In the circle for the Mavericks was Stevens who pitched a total of 4.2 innings for Mercy, striking out a game-high five batters. For the Spartans, freshman Colleen Borum pitched a total of seven innings, striking out three batters. Freshman Briana Keaveney was awarded the win for St. Thomas Aquinas.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks look to move to the winning column as they host the NYIT Bears in an ECC doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at Smith Field. Game times are set for 12:00 and 2:00 pm.
