DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2016) – Despite three hits from freshman Nicholas Chilson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) and two RBI from sophomore Nick Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y./North Shore), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-21, 3-10 ECC) have now dropped three in a row, while the Lions (24-12, 8-5 ECC) have won two in a row.

Chilson went 3-for-4 on the day with a run scored, while Daley went 1-for-3 with the two RBI. Senior Giovanni Lasalandra (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), junior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) and freshman Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) recorded the Mavericks other hits. Graduate student Matt Snyder (Albany, N.Y./University of Kentucky) made the start on the mound and went the first 8 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts to take the loss.

Molloy was led by Nicholas Gonchar and Angelo Navetta who both drove in two runs on the day. Anthony Catinella went the distance on the mound with two earned runs allowed to pick up the victory.

The visitors would score all five of their runs in the top of the first to take a commanding 5-0 lead and did not look back as they earned the win. After a strikeout to lead off the game by Deilyn Guzman, Anthony Alberghina doubled to left field. Kevin Podell then reached on an error by the shortstop to put runners on first and second with one out.

Angelo Navetta ensued with a two-run triple down the right field line to make it 2-0. After another strikeout, Brian Murphy singled home Navetta to make it 3-0. Nicholas Gonchar capped off the scoring with a two-run home run, making it 5-0 after the first half inning of play.

The Mavericks would get on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Daley that scored Fina, making it 5-1 after two innings. After giving up five runs in the first inning, Snyder settled down and did not allow another hit until the fifth inning.

Mercy recorded their second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth following a Daley RBI groundout after Chilson had doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The score remained 5-2 the rest of the way as neither team could plate a run for the remainder of the contest.

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play Molloy on the road for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
