DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2016) – Despite a team-high two hits from freshman Nicholas Chilson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 7-1 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (11-23, 4-12 ECC) fail to build off their win in game two against the Lions (26-13, 10-6 ECC) yesterday.

Chilson went 2-for-4, while senior Giovanni Lasalandra (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), sophomore Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) and freshman Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) also recorded hits. Junior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J./Sussex County CC) made the start on the mound and went the first seven innings with five earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Molloy was paced by Angelo Navetta who had a team-high two RBI. Starter Kevin Hiss went seven innings with zero earned runs allowed on four hits to pick up the win.

Mercy fell behind early and could not recover in the final game of the four-game set against the Lions. Molloy plated their first run of the game off of an error by the pitcher following a Kevin Podell hit to make it 1-0. Navetta then followed with a two-RBI single left center, bringing the score to 3-0 with no outs.

Michael Rahn later came through with an RBI double to left center to increase the score to 4-0. Anthony Galanoudis ensued with a sacrifice fly to put the score at 5-0 and Jack McCarty capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI double down the right field line.

The Mavericks would pick up their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second. Junior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) walked to begin the inning before Chilson singled to right field. The right fielder misplayed the ball which led to Mendez scoring and Chilson advancing to second. Mercy could only plate one run in the inning and concluded two innings of play down 6-1.

Costa settled down and did not allow another run after the first inning, going seven innings in total. The Lions scored their final run of the contest in the eighth on a Podell single up the middle that scored Galanoudis to make it 7-1. The deficit proved too much for the Mavericks to overcome and Molloy emerged victorious.

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 27th with a road game against Nyack at 3 p.m.
