Five Different Mavericks Record Multiple Goals as No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Defeats Dominican, 15-4
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2016) – Five different Mavericks recorded multiple goals as the No. 12 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned its fourth straight win with a 15-4 victory over ECC foe Dominican College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-2, 4-1 ECC) improve to 6-2 at home, while the Chargers (3-8, 1-4 ECC) have dropped four in a row.
Junior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) led the way with a game-high-tying four points on three goals and an assist, while freshman Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) also ended with three goals and an assist. Senior Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) netted two goals and two assists and seniors Connor McLachlan (Albany, N.Y/Guilderland) and Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) each scored a pair.
Freshman Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) picked up a goal and an assist and junior Richie Morris (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and sophomore Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) rounded out the Mavericks who scored. Junior Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) added an assist and junior Joseph Kelley (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) chipped in two assists. Senior Danny Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) led the Mavericks defensively with three groundballs and four caused turnovers. Senior A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made the start in net and went the entire first half to pick up the win and improve to 6-0 on the year.
Dominican was led by David Arent who scored a team-high two goals. Joseph Fabiilli made the start in net and went the first 45 minutes with ten saves to pick up the loss.
Mercy came in looking to make a statement and they would do just that as they opened the contest with two goals in the first five minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. MacSpadyen started the scoring off with his 14th of the season and was followed by Speicher at the 11:19 mark of the first quarter.
Rossi made it 3-0 Mavericks with a goal at the 8:58 mark off an assist from Wilcox for his 17th of the season. The Chargers came back with a goal less than a minute later to make it 3-1 and looked to be trying to stay in the game. However, Mercy responded with four straight goals to end the quarter to take a 7-1 lead after one quarter of play. Bobby Chillianis and MacSpadyen started the run with goals off assists by Rossi before Stockton and Morris capped off the scoring late in the period.
The second quarter saw Mercy add on to its lead as Speicher and McDonough netted goals to make it 9-1 with 7:50 left in the half. Dominican answered with a goal at the 3:49 mark to make it 9-2, but MacSpadyen ended the scoring in the half with just under a minute left to put the Mavericks up 10-2 at halftime.
Dominican opened the scoring in the second half to make it 10-3, but Speicher, Rossi and Stockton finished off the third quarter with goals to give Mercy a 13-3 lead after three quarters.
Arent netted his second of the day for the Chargers to begin the fourth, but that would be the last time the visitors scored as the Mavericks defense limited Dominican to just 12 shots on the day. McLachlan capped off the scoring for Mercy with two goals in the fourth off passes from Kelley to help seal the win for the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 52-12 edge in shots and a 34-26 advantage in groundballs. The Mavericks went 12-of-23 on faceoffs and 15-of-18 on clear attempts.
