Arcabascio Walk-Off Single Leads Baseball to 12-11 Victory Over Queens
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 3, 2016) – Powered by a walk-off single from sophomore Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) in the seventh inning, the Mercy College baseball team earned a 12-11 win over ECC foe Queens College on Tuesday afternoon in a game that was begun on Sunday at Mercy Field. The game resumed today in the bottom of the fifth inning with Queens ahead 10-9 with the Mavericks at the plate and a runner on third.
The Mavericks (13-25, 6-14 ECC) split the season series with the Knights (20-24, 9-15 ECC) and have won two in a row overall.
Arcabascio went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while junior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) drove in a team-high three RBI. Sophomore Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and senior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Binghamton) batted 2-for-3 with four runs and an RBI. Graduate student Matt Snyder (Albany, N.Y./University of Kentucky) picked up his sixth win of the season on the mound, pitching the final two innings of the contest.
Queens was led by Karl Klesin who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Brandon Burrell took the loss for the Knights with 2/3 innings pitched with one earned run allowed.
A high-scoring affair broke out in a game that featured 19 hits and six errors in sloppy conditions over the course of two days. The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first on three hits and a Mercy error. Klesin helped get Queens going with a two-RBI single to left field that made it 2-0 early.
Despite being down 4-0, the Mavericks came back with three runs in the bottom of the first to make it 4-3. Freshman Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) started the scoring by coming home on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Later in the inning Mendez drove home Torres on a sacrifice fly and Arcabascio followed with another sacrifice fly to score Hagan, concluding the scoring in the inning.
Mercy took their first lead of the game in the second inning when they scored three runs to take a 6-4 lead after two innings. Torres drove home senior Giovanni Lasalandra (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) with an RBI single through the left side to begin the scoring. Mendez later followed with an RBI to score Sadallah before junior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) capped off the scoring with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Torres.
The Mavericks added on to their lead in the fourth inning as Hagan scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-4 after four innings. The Knights immediately responded with six runs in the fifth inning to take back the lead at 10-7 heading to the Mavericks fifth inning.
Mercy scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-9 after Torres and Hagan both drove in runs. The game was called at that point on Sunday with one out in the inning and Hagan on third. The game resume today with Mendez at the plate and the junior executed a suicide squeeze play with Hagan scoring to tie the game up at 10-10.
The Knights retook the lead in the sixth on a double steal to take an 11-10 lead. The Mavericks followed in their half of the sixth with the tying run as Lasalandra drove home sophomore Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) on a fielder's choice to make it 11-11.
After Snyder worked around a single in the top of the seventh, Mercy scored the winning run off an Arcabascio single to second base that scored Hagan, giving the Mavericks the doubleheader sweep in two days.
