Fina Drives in a Run as Baseball Hosts LIU Post on Senior Day

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 7, 2016) – Despite an RBI from junior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) in game one and a complete game from junior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in game two, the Mercy College baseball team dropped 7-1 and 3-0 decisions to ECC foe LIU Post on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game seniors Bryan Gutierrez, James Patterson, Matt Snyder, Blake Coalla, Scott Hagan, Giovanni Lasalandra and Justin Palladino were recognized for their careers as Mavericks.
The Mavericks (13-27, 6-16 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Pioneers (21-20, 11-11 ECC) move to within a game of the fourth and final ECC playoff spot.
Game 1: LIU Post 7, Mercy 1
The opening game of the day saw the Pioneers jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as David Groeneveld doubled home Thomas Asbaty to get the scoring started.
The score remained 1-0 heading into the fifth when LIU Post plated six runs on six hits to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Asbaty started the rally off with an RBI single to right that scored Rob Andreoli who led off the inning with a double. Back-to-back doubles later in the inning scored three runs, making it 4-0 with no outs in the inning. After scoring a run on a Mercy error, Jimmy Mendyk drove home the final run of the inning with a double down the left field line.
The Mavericks responded with their lone run of the game in the bottom half of the inning as Fina brought home freshman Nicholas Chilson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City), who doubled to lead off the inning, with an RBI single to make it 7-1.
Neither team scored the rest of the way and the Pioneers came away with the game one victory. Chilson led Mercy at the plate with a 3-for-4 game one, while Fina, junior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) and sophomore Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) also recorded hits. Patterson tossed the first six innings with six earned runs allowed and five strikeouts to take the loss.
LIU Post was led at the plate by Kyle Fagan who had a team-high two RBI, while Jake DeCarli tossed a complete game with five strikeouts to earn the win.
Game 2: LIU Post 3, Mercy 0
A pitcher's duel broke out in the nightcap as the two teams combined for just ten hits and three runs. The guests jumped ahead in their first at bat as Lou Doria singled home Groeneveld to make it 1-0 after the first half inning of play.
The Pioneers tacked on their second run of the game in the third inning as Kenny Daley grounded into a double play that scored a run after consecutive singles to start the inning.
The Mavericks loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with one out, but a fly out to center would lead to the runner at third being gunned down at home plate to end the inning.
LIU Post plated their final run of the contest in the fourth inning as James Cohan plated Joe Spitaleri with a single to the pitcher to make it 3-0.
LIU Post starter Dan Jagiello retired the Mavericks down in order for the next four innings to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Nalbone went the distance with just three earned runs allowed and four strikeouts to take the loss. Sophomore Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows), Palladino and junior James Waters (Troy, N.Y./Fulton Montgomery CC) finished with the Mavericks lone hits.
Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks conclude their 2016 season tomorrow on the road at LIU Post with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
