Six Different Mavericks Score to Give Men's Soccer a 6-0 Victory Over Daemen in ECC Opener
Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2016) – The Mercy College men's soccer team received goals from six different Mavericks to earn a 6-0 victory over East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Daemen College in their ECC opener on Friday morning at Park School Field.
The Mavericks (4-0-1, 1-0 ECC) are now on a three game winning streak and undefeated in conference play. The Wildcats (1-6, 0-1 ECC) have now dropped their last two contests. The six goals are the most scored by the Mavericks since an 8-1 victory over Felician on October 18, 2012. Mercy also continues their best start since the 2013 season when they started 6-0.
Junior Ericson Penate (Reseda, Calif. / LA Mission JC) led the Mavericks offensively recording seven shots with two on goal, one goal scored and an assist. Another key contributor for the Mavericks was sophomore Mariglen Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) who added four shots, with two shots on goal, and one goal scored. Freshman Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile / Saint George's College), junior Haxhi Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y. / Marlboro), freshman Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile / Colegio Verbo Divino), and redshirt junior Carlos Rabanal (New Rochelle, N.Y. / Westchester CC) all scored one goal for the victory. Junior Kwantarian Van der Lara (Conway, Ark. /Marshalltown CC) was between the pipes for a full 90:00 minutes and made two saves for the win.
The Wildcats were led by Kyle Tracy who fired off three shots. Connor Pendleton and Colin Edwards both added one shot on goal. Aleks Veljovski recorded 90:00 minutes in goal and made six saves in a losing effort.
In a contest that saw three goals in the first half, the Mavericks were able to get on the scoreboard 14:55 into the game when Rebolledo-Camus was able to score off of a crossing feed from the right side from senior Gonzalo Prando (Jefferson Valley, N.Y. / Lakeland).
Van der Lara felt pressure in the 24th minute when Pendleton fired a shot on goal but was not able to get it past Van der Lara. The Mavericks were able to answer back offensively when Achondo was able to increase the score to 2-0 when he received a long pass from behind from junior Daniel Watson (Birmingham, England / Monroe College). Mercy kept the pressure on after Achondo's goal as they were able to fire off five more shots before Mariglen Verjoni was able to receive a pass from Achondo and take a shot from 30 yards out to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead entering halftime.
The second half saw three more goals for the Mavericks. The first goal took place less than ten minutes into the second half when Penate was able to finish off of a crossing feed headed by sophomore Lucca Lacerda (Passos, Brazil / Monroe College). After ten minutes of play and three more shots from the Mavericks, Penate was able to feed the ball to Haxhi Verjoni, who found the back of the net when he ripped a shot from just inside the box to find the inside left post to bring the score to 5-0.
The scoring was not over for the Mavericks as Rabanal scored the final goal of the game in the last minute of play when freshman Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina / Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno) passed through the defense to find Rabanal who was able to shoot it past Veljovski in goal.
Mercy capped off the day with a 29-6 advantage in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
