Serna, Noble and Boots Score to Lead Women's Soccer to 3-0 Victory Over Daemen in ECC Opener
Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2016) – Led by goals from junior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills), sophomore Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) and freshman Ally Boots (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza), the Mercy College women's soccer team opened up East Coast Conference (ECC) play with a 3-0 victory over Daemen College on Friday afternoon at Park School Field.
The Mavericks (3-2, 1-0 ECC) win their second consecutive game, while the Wildcats (2-3-1, 0-1 ECC) have a three-game unbeaten streak snapped. Mercy has now won their ECC opener for the fourth consecutive year.
Serna finished with a team high three shots on goal and recorded her third goal of the season. Noble produced two shots on goal and also notched her third goal of the year. Boots ended the contest with two shots on goal and scored her first collegiate goal. Senior Samantha Longo (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) added an assist and one shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) played the first 80 minutes with two saves to pick up the win and improve to 3-2 on the year.
Jamie Boyar led the hosts with two shots on goal. Jackie Wescott played the full 90 minutes in net and made ten saves in a losing effort.
Mercy controlled the action throughout as they held a 30-4 edge in shots and 7-0 advantage in corner kicks on the day. The Mavericks backline held the Wildcats to just two shots on goal, while the offense fired 15 shots on target.
Noble and Serna both forced Wescott to make a save in the first ten minutes of the contest, but Serna finally got the Mavericks on the board in the 12th minute. The junior fired a long high shot from the far left wing that found its way over the goalkeeper's head to make it 1-0.
Mercy continued to fire away as Wescott made four more saves in the half, but the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime. The Mavericks held a 13-3 advantage in shots at the break.
The second stanza saw Mercy dominate the action as they maintained a 17-1 edge in shots. The Mavericks had chances to add on early in the second half but a Serna shot was stopped by a Daemen defender in the 47th minute and Boots later hit the crossbar in the 60th minute. However, Noble came through in the 68th minute taking a long pass from Longo and firing it off the goalkeeper's hands into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
After hitting the crossbar earlier, Boots found the back of the net herself in the 75th minute when she took a ball bouncing around the box, following a corner, and shot it inside the near post to make it 3-0.
The Mavericks would cruise the rest of the way as the Wildcats could not get a shot off for the remainder of the game.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks look to make it three straight wins when they play at Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday, September 18th at 12 p.m.
