Serna and Noble Record Goals as Women's Soccer Defeats Roberts Wesleyan in ECC Matchup
Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2016) – Powered by goals from junior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) and sophomore Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon at RWC Stadium.
The Mavericks (4-2, 2-0 ECC) have won three games in a row, while the Redhawks (2-3-1, 1-1 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end. Mercy starts 2-0 in conference play for the third time in four years and avenges last season's loss at home to the Redhawks.
Serna finished with two shots on goal and scored her fourth goal of the season, while Noble recorded a game high three shots on goal and also added her fourth goal of the season. Junior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made the start in net and played the first 86 minutes with four saves before giving way to redshirt freshman Kaylynn Sobczyk (Orlando, Fla./Wellington) who made a save in four minutes of play.
Bella Mitrevski led the hosts with two shots on goal, while Kelsey Brinkel made four saves in a losing effort.
Mercy came out looking to conclude their western New York trip with two wins and they would come out with the first shot of the game at the 3:53 mark. Serna later fired the first shot on goal of the game in the 7th minute, but Brinkel came up with the stop and the game remained scoreless.
The Mavericks ended the scoring drought in the 20th minute when Serna took a feed from Noble and shot the ball from inside the box over the goalkeeper's head to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime as the Mavericks held a 7-3 advantage in shots.
The second stanza saw the Redhawks force Price to make a save in the 57th and 62nd minutes of action, but the junior was up to the task and kept the hosts off the board.
Mercy would add on an insurance goal in the 81st minute when Noble ran past the defense to a through ball and fired the ball into the top right corner, making it 2-0. The Redhawks responded with a pair of shots on goal but Price and Sobczyk came up with the stops to preserve the second straight shutout win for the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 15-12 edge in shots, while the two teams both took four corner kicks on the day.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 22nd when they play at Nyack College at 4 p.m.
