Wandle Scores as Field Hockey Hosts No. 8 Saint Anselm
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2016) – Despite a goal from senior Jen Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 8 Saint Anselm College in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-3) drop their second game in a row, while the Hawks (5-1) have now won five in a row.
Wandle scored her first collegiate goal, while sophomore Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) added a team high two shots. Sophomore Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made two defensive saves to lead the Mavericks defensively. Sophomore Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made the start in the cage and played the first 35 minutes with five saves and two goals allowed to take the loss. Sophomore Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) played in goal in the second half and made three saves.
Saint Anselm was led by Allia Connolly, Jackie Guillemette and Rose Mooney who each recorded a goal. Emma Kincaid and Mary Nee contributed an assist, while goalie Katherine Sears made three saves to pick up the win.
The opening half saw the visitors come out with four penalty corners in the first eight minutes, but Amell was up to the challenge making three saves to keep the game 0-0.
Amell made two more saves later in the period before the Hawks got on the board in the 27th minute. Kincaid fed the ball to Connolly from just outside the circle and Connolly fired the shot in the lower left corner to put Saint Anselm up 1-0.
The Mavericks responded with a penalty corner and a shot by senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) that was stopped by Sears, but the score remained 1-0. Saint Anselm increased their lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute when Mooney scored off a penalty stroke. The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime with the Hawks holding a 10-1 edge in shots.
The second half saw Pettit make three saves to begin the half before Guillemette found the back of the cage off a pass from Nee to make it 3-0 in favor of the Hawks.
The score remained 3-0 until the Mavericks drew a penalty stroke with no time remaining on the clock following a penalty corner. Wandle stepped up and fired it past Sears to get Mercy on the board as the game came to end.
Saint Anselm held an 18-6 edge in shots and a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners on the day.
