Ballin Records Three Shots on Goal as Field Hockey Plays at ECAC Foe Lindenwood
Box Score ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Sept. 25, 2016) – Despite a team high three shots on goal from senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) and six saves from sophomore Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 7-0 decision to Lindenwood University in an ECAC matchup on Sunday afternoon at Hunter Stadium.
The Mavericks (1-5, 1-2 ECAC) drop their second straight ECAC game, while the Lions (5-1, 2-0 ECAC) remain perfect in ECAC play.
Also, recording shots on goal for the Mavericks were sophomores Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) and freshman Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester Jr/Sr). Amell made her six saves in the first half, while sophomore Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) made five stops in the second half.
Lindenwood was led by Karlie Quinn who had two goals and an assist. Skylar Starbeck played the first 53:04 of the contest and made five saves to pick up the win.
The Lions came out and forced Amell to make four saves in the first six minutes following a pair of penalty corners. Ballin responded with her three shots on goal in the 8th minute following a penalty corner by senior Olivia Anderson (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber), but the score remained 0-0.
Lindenwood broke through in the 9th minute when Quinn scored her first of the day off an assist from Tara Robben to make it 1-0. Amell made another save in the 15th minute, but the Lions would get back on the board in the 18th minute as Noor Fons found the back of the cage to make it 2-0.
Williams followed with a shot on goal, but Starbeck was up to the challenge and kept the score at 2-0. Lindenwood added their final goal of the half in the 31st minute to make it 3-0 heading into halftime. The Lions held a 14-4 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in penalty corners at intermission.
Lindenwood scored their first goal of the second half in the 40th minute and added on three more to seal the victory. The Lions concluded the contest with a 29-7 advantage in shots and a 23-3 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they host St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday, September 27th at 4 p.m.
