Noble Records Game-High Five Points to Lead Women's Soccer to a 4-1 Victory Over ECC Opponent NYIT
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2016) - Led by two goals and an assist from sophomore Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent NYIT on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-2, 3-0 ECC) continue to be undefeated in conference play with the win, while the Bears (3-4, 0-2) remain winless in the conference. Mercy has now won five games in a row which is their longest winning streak since the 2014 season.
Ten different Mavericks recorded shots during the contest to keep the pressure on the Bears defense. Noble applied pressure on the Bears from the start of the game when just three minutes into play she fired a shot at NYIT's goalie Jessie Sabal. The save did not discourage Noble however, who found the back of the net in the ninth minute of play to score the first goal of the contest. Noble was able to score off of a cross from junior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills) to finish in the lower right of the goal. Just four minutes later Noble would improve the score to 2-0 when she scored her sixth goal of the season off of a pass from sophomore Ileen Mejia (Whittier, Calif. / La Mirada HS).
The Mavericks controlled the remainder of the half offensively, as they were able to draw four corner kicks compared to the Bears none. Mercy entered halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The Bears began the second half hungry for a goal as they drew two corner kicks and Dina Simonian took a shot in the first four minutes of the half. However, it was not enough as the Mavericks improved their lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute when junior Stephanie Escala (Corona, N.Y. / Long Island City) was able to score off of a cross inside the box from Noble. An NYIT red card just 50 seconds later would set Serna up for her sixth goal of the season when she was able to successfully score on a penalty kick to improve the score to 4-0 Mavericks.
After fifteen minutes of back-and-forth action, the Bears were finally able to put one on the board when Simonian was able to score off of a shot from outside the box. However, it was not enough as the Mavericks earned the win with a score of 4-1.
The Bears were led by Simonian, who scored the lone goal for the Bears along with recording three shots with two on goal. Taylor Davide also recorded one shot for the Bears. Jessie Sabal played a full 90 minutes in goal and recorded six saves. For the Mavericks, junior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz. / Millennium) also recorded a full 90 minutes and made one save for the win.
The Mavericks ended the contest with a 15-4 advantage in shots and a 9-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when they travel to take on the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas at 12 p.m.
