RINDGE, N.H. (Sept. 3, 2016) – Senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) recorded two shots on goal and sophomore goalkeeper Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) made four saves as the Mercy College field hockey team opened up its 2016 season with a 3-0 setback to Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field.

The Mavericks (0-1) drop their second straight meeting against the Ravens (2-0) who remain undefeated on the year with the win.

Ballin ended the day with both of the team's shots on goal and had a team high three shots on the day. Sophomore Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and senior Olivia Kelleher (Laureldale, N.J./Cedar Creek) also recorded a shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made the start in the cage and played the first half with two saves to pick up the loss. Pettit played the second half and made four saves. Junior Rachel Gumowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) helped contribute on defense with her first defensive save of the year.

Franklin Pierce received two goals from Carly Canavan and a goal from Dayna Kowesky. Meaghan Williams played the full 70 minutes in goal and made two saves to pick up the win.

The hosts wasted little time on getting on the board as following a penalty corner Kowesky took a pass from Emma McGonagle and finished into an empty net to make it 1-0 just under six minutes in.

The Ravens added their second goal of the day just over a minute later as Canavan dribbled through the defense to the front of net and ended with a reverse-stick finish to give Franklin Pierce a 2-0 advantage at the 7:11 mark of the first half.

Kelleher responded with the Mavericks first shot of the day and Ballin forced Williams to make a save at the 12:17 mark, but Mercy could not break through and the scored remained 2-0. The Ravens had a chance to add on another goal in the 32nd minute, but Amell made a stop on a Shannon O'Leary penalty stroke to keep it at 2-0 heading into halftime.

The second half saw the hosts get on the board again in the 40th minute as Lauren Grimard dribbled in from the left side and sent the ball into Canavan, who then finished it off at the penalty spot for the goal to make it 3-0.

Ballin came back with her second shot on goal, but Williams made another save and the score stayed at 3-0 for the remainder of the contest.

Franklin Pierce held a 17-5 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
