Pettit Makes Eight Saves and Ballin Records Two Shots on Goal as Field Hockey Plays at Southern New Hampshire
Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. (Sept. 30, 2016) – Despite a game high eight saves from sophomore Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) and two shots on goal from senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to Southern New Hampshire University in a non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon at Larkin Field.
The Mavericks (2-6) fail to build off their win on Tuesday, while the Penmen (4-6) have won two of their last three games.
Also, recording a shot on goal was sophomore Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), while Pettit made all eight of her saves in the second half. Sophomore Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made the start in the cage and made three saves to pick up the loss.
Southern New Hampshire was led by Mikaela Gauvain, Cassidy Huckins, Amaris Taylor and Erin Frost who all recorded goals. Goalkeeper Melanie Rennie played the first 58 minutes in goal and made two saves to earn the victory.
The Penmen came out with the first scoring chance of the contest in the 3rd minute when Huckins hit the post. Just over a minute later the hosts got on the board as Frost took a pass from Huckins and redirected the ball into the cage to make it 1-0.
Amell followed with three saves to keep the score at 1-0, but Southern New Hampshire scored again in the 19th minute when Taylor tapped the ball into the goal following a pass across the net from Laura van der Doorn.
The Penmen scored their final goal of the half in the 21st minute when Gauvain scored off a penalty corner by Taylor to make it 3-0. Ballin recorded a shot on goal late in the half for the Mavericks, but Rennie made the stop to keep it at 3-0 heading into halftime.
The second half saw Southern New Hampshire control the ball in Mercy's end of the field for most of the half. However, Pettit made five saves to keep the score at 3-0 heading into the 59th minute. The Penmen finally broke through on Pettit as Huckins scored off a rebound in front of the net to give Southern New Hampshire their final goal of the day.
Bryan responded with her shot on goal in the 60th minute but the Mavericks were unable to find the back of the cage and the Penmen emerged victorious. Southern New Hampshire held a 27-5 edge in shots and a 17-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, October 2nd when they host ECAC foe Newberry at 1 p.m.
