Calderaro Records a Goal as Women's Soccer Takes on Southern New Hampshire

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 4, 2016) – Despite a goal from sophomore Lauren Calderaro (La Verne, Calif./Bonita), the Mercy College women's soccer team suffered a 4-1 setback to non-conference foe Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon at Jess Dow Field on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University.

The Mavericks (1-1) drop their first game of the season, while the Penmen (1-1) pick up their first win of the season.

Calderaro finished with a team high five shots on goal, while junior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) ended the day with an assist. Junior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made five saves in a losing effort to fall to 1-1 on the year.

Southern New Hampshire received two goals from Trisha Luis and a goal from Sydney Crema and Danielle Humphreys. Abigail Maker had two assists and Courtney Benson also recorded an assist. Paige Salmon made nine saves in net to pick up the win.

The Penmen came out on the attack with Price making two saves in the first ten minutes. Southern New Hampshire finally broke through in the 20th minute when Luis took a pass from Maker and shot from the right side past Price to make it 1-0.

Sophomore Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) followed with the Mavericks first shot on goal of the day in the 23rd minute, but Salmon made the stop to keep it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 until the 41-minute mark when Humphreys fired a shot on the right side of the goal past Price to give the Penmen a 2-0 lead.

Calderaro immediately responded with her first of the season 30 seconds later, putting a shot on the left side of the goal after a pass from Serna to make it 2-1 in favor of the Penmen heading into halftime. Southern New Hampshire held a 6-5 edge in shots in the opening half.

The second half saw the Penmen score in the 51st minute when Luis headed the ball into the right side of goal off a corner by Benson to make it 3-1. The Mavericks came back later in the half with five shots on goal, but Salmon stopped all five to keep the Penmen ahead 3-1.

Southern New Hampshire added a goal in the 81st minute by Crema to put the game away.

Mercy outshot the Penmen 7-5 in the second half to end the game with a 12-11 edge in shots. The Mavericks also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks will look to bounce back when they host American International College in their home opener on Thursday, September 8th at 4 p.m.
