DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2016) – Despite a shot on goal from juniors Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) and Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and freshman Dominique Banks (San Diego, Calif./Helix Charter), the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to American International College in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon in their home opener at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (1-2) drop their second straight game, while the Yellow Jackets (1-2) pick up their first win of the season.

Serna ended the day with a team high four shots, while Banks added three shots. Junior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made three saves in net to take the loss.

Taylor Kue scored the lone goal of the game in the 13th minute to lead American International. Johanna Englund recorded an assist and Madison Brown made two saves in the first half to pick up the win.

Mercy started strong as Banks recorded the first shot of the game in the 2nd minute. Linnea Herbertsson followed with a shot just under a minute later for the Yellow Jackets before Serna followed with one of the Mavericks best chances in the 4th minute. Serna's shot hit the crossbar and the game remained 0-0.

After a Mercy foul in the 13th minute, Englund took a free kick that was initially saved by Price before going to Kue who fired it into the back of the net to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks followed with two consecutive shots, but Brown made a pair of saves to keep the score at 1-0. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime as Mercy controlled the action most of the way, ending the half with a 7-5 edge in shots.

The second half saw the Mavericks once again maintain possession in the American International end of the field for most of the half and have several scoring chances, but were unable to find the equalizer as the Yellow Jackets escaped with the win.

Mercy ended the contest with an 11-7 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks look to bounce back when they host Le Moyne College on Tuesday, September 13th at 3 p.m.
