Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays at NYIT
Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2017) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 79-58 decision to ECC foe NYIT on Wednesday night at Recreation Hall.
The Mavericks (3-14, 1-8 ECC) fail to build off their win on Saturday, while the Bears (10-7, 4-5 ECC) have won five of their last seven games.
Junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) led Mercy with 13 points and nine rebounds, while junior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) finished the night with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) rounded out three Mavericks scoring in double figures with 11 points.
NYIT was led by Shanice Allen who had a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
Mercy looked to take another ECC contest, but would fall behind 8-2 at the 7:51 mark of the opening quarter. Sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) later followed with a layup at the 5:48 mark to tie the game up at 10-10, but the Bears would end the period on an 18-5 run to take a 28-15 lead after one quarter.
NYIT broke open the game in the second quarter, opening the frame on a 10-2 run to take a 38-17 lead with 5:42 left before halftime. The Bears built the lead up to 24, 51-27, with 13 seconds left in the stanza before sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) drained a pair of free throws right before halftime to make it 51-29 at the intermission.
The Bears began the third quarter on an 11-3 run to increase the lead to 30, 62-32, with 5:25 on the third period clock. NYIT went on to outscore the Mavericks 19-11 in the period and took a 70-40 lead after three quarters of play.
Mercy continued to battle in the fourth quarter and finished by outscoring the hosts 18-9. The Mavericks cut the deficit to 19, 76-57, at the 1:33 mark following an Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) layup before NYIT closed out the game with two of the next three points to secure the win.
The Mavericks shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the floor, 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from beyond the arc and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the foul line. The Bears shot 53.2 percent (33-of-62) from the floor, 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from downtown and 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the foul line. NYIT held a 45-28 edge on the glass and a 40-24 advantage in points off turnovers.
