Three Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays at Daemen
Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Jan. 2, 2017) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team began 2017 with a 79-66 setback to Daemen College in an ECC matchup on Monday night at Lumsden Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (1-11, 0-5 ECC) have dropped seven games in a row, while the Wildcats (5-8, 2-3 ECC) have won two games in a row. The 66 points are a season-high for Mercy and the Mavericks shot a season-best 39.7 percent from the floor.
Sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) led the way with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from downtown, while sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) contributed 13 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) rounded out three Mavericks scoring in double figures with ten points and five assists. Junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) ended the night with nine points and five rebounds.
Daemen was led by Sarah Saba who had a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. Jesse DeWaters added 18 points and Sydney Jones recorded 15 points.
Mercy opened the contest with a strong start as they jumped out to an 11-4 lead with 4:49 left in the first quarter after a pair of free throws by Perez. However, Daemen would close the period out on an 11-0 run to take a 15-11 lead after one quarter.
The Wildcats held a 17-13 advantage with 9:21 left before halftime, but Mercy would have an answer as they responded with a 15-6 run to take the lead back at 28-23 with 4:12 remaining before halftime. Daemen closed the half on a 5-1 run to cut the Mavericks lead to one, 29-28, at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Wildcats open the frame on a 13-2 run to take a 10-point lead, 41-31, with 5:11 left in the quarter. The Mavericks battled back and cut the deficit to seven, 49-42, after three quarters of play.
Mercy got within four, 51-47, with nine minutes left to play after a Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College) trifecta, but the Wildcats ensued with a 21-9 run to take their largest lead of the game, 72-56, with 2:18 left in the game. Daemen would hold a double-digit lead the rest of the way to come away with the victory.
The Mavericks shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the floor, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from downtown and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the foul line. The Wildcats shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the floor, 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from beyond the arc and 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 38-36 edge on the boards and a 16-3 advantage in fastbreak points.
