Senior Spotlight: Ryan Hickey, Men's Basketball

Mercy College Athletics caught up with graduate student Ryan Hickey of the Mercy College Men's Basketball Team for the week two release of a weekly Senior Spotlight series that will have a new senior interviewed every Monday. The Senior Spotlight Series allows Maverick fans to get to know Mercy student-athletes on and off of the playing field and court.

So far this season, Hickey leads the Mavericks offense, averaging 12.8 points per game. He also leads the team in minutes per game, averaging 37.0. Hickey scored his 1,000th career point against NYIT on January 18th.

We spoke with the graduate student pursuing his Master of Business Administration from Smithtown, N.Y. to learn more about his experiences as a Maverick. 

 

Q: How did you start playing basketball?

A: I have had a basketball in my hands ever since I can remember. I started playing around the ages 3-4 in CYO leagues on Long Island.

 

Q: What made you decide to continue your education at Mercy College?

A: After Dowling College, the institution where I attained my undergrad and played my first 3 years of basketball at, closed down in May, Mercy's 1 year MBA Turbo Program and basketball program were deciding factors for me to continue my education here. The great location and campus didn't hurt either.

 

Q: Who is your favorite professional athlete and why?

A: Derek Jeter. Always has and always will be. The definition of class and success, a true role model.

 

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have received?

A: "Everything happens for a reason."

 

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: Hanging out and traveling with childhood friends and spending quality time with my family

 

Q: What are you studying? How did you decide that?

A: Currently in the MBA program here at Mercy with a concentration in Finance. Business world excites me with wide range of potential opportunities it provides

 

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A: Want to be successful and happy in whatever career path I choose
