Clark Records Career-High 17 Points and 12 Rebounds as Women's Basketball Plays at Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 2017) – Despite a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds from junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped an 84-60 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday night at the Voller Athletic Center.
The Mavericks (1-12, 0-6 ECC) have dropped eight games in a row, while the Redhawks (9-5, 3-2 ECC) move over .500 in ECC play.
Clark went 7-of-9 from the field, while sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) added eight points. Sophomore Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) also contributed eight points and six rebounds and sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) chipped in six points, six rebounds and five assists.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Taya Andrews who had a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Brooke Fields poured in 13 points and Kindsay Brandt and Necedah James both dropped in 11 points.
The Redhawks got off to a quick start, jumping out to an 8-2 lead at the 7:20 mark of the first quarter after an Andrews jumper. The Mavericks quickly responded with an 11-7 run to cut the deficit to two, 15-13, with 3:16 left in the quarter after a Hall layup. Roberts Wesleyan headed into the second quarter with just a four-point lead, 22-18.
The second quarter saw the Redhawks open the period with the first six points to take their first double-digit lead, 28-18, with 8:11 left in the half. Mercy continued to battle and followed with a 7-0 run, aided by four points from Clark, to get within three, 28-25, at the 6:51 mark. Roberts Wesleyan came back with a run of their own and took a 43-29 lead with 22 seconds left in the half before Clark nailed a layup right before halftime to make it 43-31 in favor of the Redhawks.
Perez began the second half scoring with a layup to make it 43-33, but Roberts Wesleyan went on a 22-6 run to increase their lead to 65-39 with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter. The hosts ended the quarter with a 74-44 lead after outscoring the Mavericks 31-13 in the period.
Mercy would outscore the Redhawks 16-10 in the fourth quarter, but the Roberts Wesleyan lead proved too much for the Mavericks to overcome.
The Mavericks shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor, 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from beyond the arc and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the foul line. The Redhawks shot 42.9 percent (30-of-70) from the field, 45.5 percent (15-of-33) from downtown and 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 43-36 edge on the glass. Roberts Wesleyan used 19 Mercy turnovers to hold a 25-4 edge in points off turnovers.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, January 7th against Maine-Fort Kent at Westchester Community College at 12:30 p.m.
