Boots Records Hat-Trick as No. 23 Women's Soccer Defeats Roberts Wesleyan, 4-1

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2017) – Powered by a hat-trick from sophomore Ally Boots (Yorba Linda, Esperanza), the No. 23 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (13-2, 6-1 ECC) bounce back from their first ECC loss of the season and have locked up a spot in the ECC Tournament for the fifth straight year, while the Redhawks (2-11-1, 1-6 ECC) fail to build off their win last time out. Mercy will either be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the upcoming tournament and the Mavericks are guaranteed to host a semifinal matchup on November 1st.

Boots now has 12 goals on the year, breaking the single-season school record of 10 set previously by Haley Noble and Kristin Hunt. Also, scoring was junior Corinna Ferrante (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) who netted her sixth goal of the season. Senior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) added three assists and junior Kendall Wright (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo), sophomore Jessica Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) and freshman Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) also dished out assists. Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Torres made seven saves to earn the win.

Mackenzie Kidder recorded Roberts Wesleyan's lone goal, while Kelsey Brinkel played the first 56:08 in goal with three saves to take the loss.

Mercy looked to get back to their winning ways, but it was the Redhawks who got on the board first less than a minute in to take a 1-0 lead. Kidder scored following a scramble in front of the net after a Roberts Wesleyan corner kick.

The Redhawks continued to apply pressure with Torres making five saves before the Mavericks finally struck in the 40th minute to tie the game up at 1-1. Ferrante headed the ball into the net after receiving a cross from Wright, putting Mercy on the scoreboard.

Boots wasted little time in giving the Mavericks the lead as she scored in the 42nd minute to put Mercy ahead, 2-1. The sophomore received a double pass from Brandt and Serna and fired the ball into the upper left corner of the net to give the Mavericks the lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw Boots tack on two more goals in the first 20 minutes of the half to put the Mavericks ahead 4-1 and they would hold on for the victory.

Mercy held a 16-9 edge in shots, while Roberts Wesleyan held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 25th when they host Southern New Hampshire at 3 p.m.
