Four Different Mavericks Score as Men's Soccer Earns 4-1 Win Over Dominican

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2017) – Powered by four different Mavericks scoring, the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over Dominican College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (12-4) have won two games in a row and have their most wins in a season since 2004, while the Chargers (3-14) close out their season with a loss.

Sophomore Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno) had a goal and an assist and graduate student Danny Gavin (Phoenix, Ariz./University of Washington), junior Alejandro Alvarez (Pereira, Colombia/American International College) and sophomore Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) also scored. Senior Ericson Penate (Reseda, Calif./LA Mission JC) and redshirt freshman Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT Argentina) added assists. Senior Kwantarian Van der Lara (Stockholm, Sweden/Marshalltown CC) made six saves to earn the win in goal.

Dominican received a goal from Sergio Monton and Matthew Snow played the first half in goal and made three saves to take the loss.

After nearly 43 scoreless minutes of action, Gavin opened the scoring with a goal on a shot from the top of the box to put Mercy up 1-0. It remained 1-0 at halftime with the Mavericks holding a 15-6 edge in shots in the opening half.

It was 1-0 until the 67th minute when Alvarez found the back of the net on a shot following a deflected shot taken by Corral, giving Mercy a 2-0 lead. Less than two minutes later Rebolledo-Camus scored after Penate's shot hit the post, making it 3-0.

Monton scored Dominican's lone goal in the 76th minute when he scored off an indirect kick to get the Chargers within 3-1. Corral responded with his goal in the 78th minute off a corner kick to give the Mavericks a 4-1 lead and they held on the rest of the way for the victory.

Mercy held a 28-14 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 28th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
