DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2017) – Despite a combined eight kills from seniors Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and Danielle Sarasky (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) on Senior Night, the Mercy College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (20-25, 13-25, 18-25) setback to University of Bridgeport in an ECC matchup on Wednesday night at Dobbs Ferry High School.
The Mavericks (6-20, 0-10 ECC) remain winless in ECC play, while the Purple Knights (11-11, 7-3 ECC) improve to .500 on the year.
Johnson had five kills and four digs, while Sarasky had three kills and four digs. Junior Kaitlyn Partridge (Corona, Calif./Mt. San Antonio College) had a team-high six kills along with eight digs and freshman Adriana Lopez-Soto (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame HS) had a team-high nine digs and ten assists.
Bridgeport was led by Emily Burford who had a match-high 13 kills.
The opening set of the match saw the Mavericks get off to a 4-3 lead after a block by Partridge. However, the Purple Knights came back on a 10-3 run to build a 13-7 advantage. Mercy battled back and cut the deficit to three, 22-19, but Bridgeport ended the set on a 3-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.
The second set was tied at 3-3 before the Purple Knights ended the set on a 22-10 run to increase their lead to 2-0.
Bridgeport jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the third set, but the Mavericks did not quit and evened the set up at 13-13 after a Partridge kill. The Purple Knights then ensued with a 12-5 run to close out the set and the match.
Mercy hit .118 with 24 kills and 37 digs, while Bridgeport hit .354 with 44 kills and 46 digs.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 31st when they host Molloy College at 7 p.m. at Dobbs Ferry High School.
