Johnson Posts Team-High 10 Kills as Volleyball Hosts Queens for Dig Pink Match

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (October 3, 2017) - Despite a team-high ten kills from senior Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (20-25, 23-25, 16-25) decision to Queens College in an East Coast Conference matchup on Tuesday night for their Dig Pink Match at Dobbs Ferry High School.

The Mavericks (3-13) drop their sixth straight match, while the Knights (3-7) snap their three game losing streak.

Junior Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Demarest) was another standout for the Mavericks, as she recorded 22 assists, four kills, one ace and one block. Freshman Courtney Gebhardt (Bloomingburg, N.Y. / Pine Bush) added eight digs, seven kills, two aces, and one block. Junior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico / William Boone) recorded 13 digs for the Mavericks.

Queens was led by Reggie Anthony who had a match high 20 digs and added four assists and three aces.

The first set was a back and forth battle between the Knights and the Mavericks. Queens was able to maintain the lead for the first half of the set until a service ace from Gebhardt would tie the set at 13-13. Mercy continued to fight but were unable to overcome the Knights as they went on a 5-0 tear to close out the first set with a score of 25-20.

The second set of the night saw the Mavericks open up to an early lead as they were able to record four and five unanswered points, holding a 12-4 lead at one point in the set. Mercy held their lead until Queens got back on track and were able to rattle off enough points to tie the match 20-20. A service ace from Cassidy Stewart would put Queens in a good situation to take the second set as they eventually took the second set 25-23 and built a 2-0 lead.

The final set of the night found the Knights able to hold the lead throughout the third set. The Knights jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the Mavericks battled back and got within two, 17-15. However, Queens ended the set on an 8-1 run to secure the set and match.

The Mavericks hit .041 on the night with 29 kills and 50 digs, while the Knights concluded the night hitting .183 with 34 kills and 59 digs.

Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks will look to bounce back when they travel to Molloy  in an ECC matchup on Wednesday, October 4th at 7 p.m.
