BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (Oct. 4, 2017) – Powered by the game-winning goal from senior Ericson Penate (Reseda, Calif. / El Camino Real) in the 16th minute, the Mercy College men's soccer team earned their fifth shutout win with a 1-0 victory at ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (7-3, 3-1 ECC) pick up their fourth road win of the year and win at Bridgeport for the first time since prior to 2000, while the Purple Knights (2-6-1, 1-3-1 ECC) have dropped two games in a row.
Penate scored his third game-winning goal of the year on two shots on goal and a team high five shots. Sophomore Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Verbo Divino) dished out one assist and added one shot on goal in the victory. Senior Kwantarian Van der Lara (Stockholm, Sweden/Marshalltown CC) made five saves in goal to pick up the shutout.
Bridgeport received three shots on goal from Jovante Etienne, while Daniel Coviella made five saves in a losing effort.
Mercy looked to build off their win on Saturday and came out with the first two shots of the game. The Mavericks got on the board in the 15th minute when Penate was able to find the back of the net on a header sent from Achondo, to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks headed into halftime up 1-0 despite the Purple Knights holding a 7-6 edge in shots.
The second half saw the Mercy backline continue to hold its own as they refused to allow the Purple Knights to find the back of the net. Despite firing off nine shots in the second half, the Mavericks were unable to add an insurance goal past due to Coviella recording four saves.
Mercy held a 15-13 edge in shots, while Bridgeport held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks look to make it five wins in a row when they play at Daemen College on Saturday, October 7th at 1 p.m.
