BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 8, 2017) – Despite a double-double from junior Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest), the Mercy College volleyball team ended their season with a 3-0 (14-25, 13-25, 20-25) setback to ECC foe LIU Post on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (7-25, 1-13 ECC) end the season with three more wins than all of last year, while the Pioneers (28-4, 12-2 ECC) stay atop the ECC standings.
Runge finished with 15 assists and 12 digs, while freshman Courtney Gebhardt (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) had five kills. Junior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Monroe College) added nine digs.
LIU Post was led by Danielle Valenza who had a match-high 13 kills.
The opening set saw the hosts jump out to an 11-2 lead and they did not look back in securing the opening set, 25-14.
The Mavericks trailed by a point, 7-6, early on in set two before the Pioneers rattled off a 7-1 run to take a 14-7 lead. Mercy cut the deficit to five, 16-11, but LIU Post concluded the set on a 9-2 run to secure the second set, 25-13.
The Pioneers opened the third set with the first five points, but the Mavericks regained their edge and took a 19-18 lead later in the set after a Danielle Sarasky (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) kill. However, LIU Post concluded the set on a 7-1 run to secure the match in three sets.
Mercy hit .084 with 22 kills and 39 digs, while LIU Post hit .275 with 44 kills and 53 digs.
