Four Mavericks Post Double Figures in Points as Women's Basketball Hosts Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score VALHALLA, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2017) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 75-70 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Tuesday night at Westchester Community College.
The Mavericks (3-20, 1-14 ECC) drop the season series to the Redhawks (15-10, 9-6 ECC), who have won two games in a row.
Junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) led the Mavericks with 16 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) netted 14 points and four assists. Sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) poured in 13 points and added six rebounds. Freshman Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College) rounded out the four Mavericks scoring in double figures with 12 points and four assists.
Roberts Wesleyan was paced by Brooke Fields who had a game-high 24 points.
The opening quarter saw Mercy fall behind 8-2 less than two minutes in. The guests increased the lead to eight, 15-7, with 27 seconds left in the frame before junior Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) drained a three right before the end of the quarter to make it 15-10.
The Mavericks began the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 16-15 advantage with 8:58 remaining in the half after a pair of Perez free throws. Mercy took a two-point lead, 21-19, at the seven-minute mark following a Wilson three-point play. However, Roberts Wesleyan followed with an 11-0 run to take their largest lead of the half, 30-21, with 4:46 on the clock.
Despite falling behind, the Mavericks did not let up and immediately came back with a 9-0 run to even the score up at 30-30 with just under two minutes left in the half. The Redhawks would go into halftime with a 35-32 lead after a three from Fields just before the end of the half.
Roberts Wesleyan began the second half by increasing the lead back to six, 41-35, but Mercy continued to battle and retook the lead at 42-41 following a Clark layup. The Redhawks ensued with an 11-5 run to get the lead back at 52-47 with 2:03 remaining in the quarter. The Mavericks ended the quarter with four straight points to head into the final stanza down one, 52-51.
The visitors got the lead back up to four, 60-56, with 6:35 remaining, but Mercy continued to claw its way back into the game and would tie the game up at 60-60 with 4:48 left. Roberts Wesleyan then went on a 5-0 run to take a 65-60 before the Mavericks made it a one-point affair, 65-64, with 2:12 on the clock. The Redhawks went on to make a pair of baskets on their next two possessions to take a five-point lead and held on the rest of the way for the victory.
Mercy shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the floor, 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from downtown and 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the charity stripe. Roberts Wesleyan shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field, 35.3 percent (12-of-34) from beyond the arc and 88.2 percent (15-of-17) from the foul line. The Redhawks held a 41-40 advantage on the glass and a 15-6 edge in second chance points.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, February 19th when they play at the University of the District of Columbia at 2 p.m.
