Eight Different Mavericks Score as No. 10/13 Men's Lacrosse Earns 16-6 Victory Over Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Feb. 18, 2017) – Powered by eight different Mavericks scoring, highlighted by a game-high four goals from sophomore Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), the No. 10/13 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 16-6 victory over Georgian Court University on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the fifth straight season, while the Lions (0-1) begin their second varsity season with a loss.

Chillianis recorded his four goals on seven shots, while junior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) netted three goals and an assist. Graduate student Kevin McNally (Hillburn, N.Y./University at Albany) and senior Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) both produced two goals and two assists and sophomore Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) finished with two goals and an assist. Senior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and freshman Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) added a goal and two assists each and McPartland also added a team-high-tying five ground balls. Freshman Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) rounded out eight different Mavericks scoring with his second goal of the season, while sophomore Luke Baron (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scooped up five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Junior Christian Gebhardt (West Islip, N.Y./Nassau CC) had a team-high three caused turnovers and sophomore Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led Mercy in the faceoff circle, going 13-of-19. Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made his second straight start in goal and made four saves in the first half to earn the victory, improving to 2-0.

Georgian Court was led by CJ Francisco who had a team-high three goals, while Troy Longley contributed a team-high four ground balls. Austin Geissel played the full 60 minutes in net and made 11 saves in a losing effort.

The hosts got off to a quick start as Joe Ramirez scored the first goal of the game off the opening faceoff to give the Lions a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the game. It remained a 1-0 game until Wilcox found the back of the net at the 6:33 mark to tie the game up at 1-1. Mercy continued to battle and would take their first lead of the game just under a minute later as McNally put home a pass from McPartland, making it 2-1.

Georgian Court responded with a goal at the 4:47 mark to tie the game at 2-2, but the Mavericks would end the quarter with two straight goals from MacSpadyen and Martinez to take a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play.

Mercy continued to play well in the second quarter as Martinez and McNally both netted their second goals of the game less than three minutes into the frame, making it 6-2 and forcing a Lions timeout. Georgian Court made it a three-goal game, 6-3, after a Ryder Verdoni man-up goal, but McPartland answered with a man-up goal of his own to make it 7-3 in favor of Mercy with 9:07 left in the half. The Mavericks went on two outscore the Lions 6-1 in the second quarter as Chillianis scored two more and Cortese added another to make it 10-3 Mavericks at halftime.

Georgian Court opened the scoring in the third quarter to cut the Mercy lead to 10-4, but Wilcox and MacSpadyen rattled off back-to-back tallies less than a minute apart to increase the Mavericks advantage to 12-4 with 10:33 remaining in the period. Francisco scored his second goal of the game at the 7:44 mark, but Speicher closed the quarter out with a goal at the four-second mark to put Mercy ahead 13-5 heading into the final stanza.

The Mavericks outscored the Lions 3-1 in the fourth quarter as Chillianis scored his final two goals of the day and Martinez chipped in his third of the day to help secure the victory for Mercy.

Mercy held a 40-24 edge in shots, a 28-19 advantage in ground balls and a 12-4 edge in caused turnovers. The Mavericks went 15-of-24 on face-offs and 20-of-24 on clear attempts.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, February 21st when they host Saint Rose at Mercy Field at 3 p.m.
