McPartland Scores Game-High Five Goals as No. 10 Men's Lacrosse Earns 12-5 Victory Over Saint Rose
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2017) – Powered by a career-high five goals from freshman Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 10 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 12-5 victory over College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-0) start 3-0 for the first time since the 2013 season, while the Golden Knights (0-1) fall in their season opener.
McPartland also finished with an assist and two ground balls, while sophomore Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) contributed two goals and three assists. Graduate student Kevin McNally (Hillburn, N.Y./University at Albany) recorded three goals and an assist and senior Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) chipped in a goal and senior Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) added two assists. Junior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) and freshman Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) both picked up assists on the day. Sophomore Luke Baron (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) ended the contest with a game-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers to lead the Mavericks defense. Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) played the full 60 minutes in goal and made 14 saves in improving to 3-0 on the year.
Five different Golden Knights recorded a goal for Saint Rose, while Liam Guiton made 15 saves in a losing effort in goal.
Mercy looked to get off to a quick start, but it was the Golden Knights who would score first at the 14:17 mark of the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks fell behind 1-0 in their last game against Georgian Court and would come back like they did on Saturday. Wilcox got Mercy on the board with 6:09 remaining in the opening quarter off an assist from Speicher, making it 1-1.
The Mavericks came back for more less than a minute later as MacSpadyen found the back of the net following a pass from Cortese to make it 2-1 Mercy. The Golden Knights added a tally with 45 seconds left in the quarter to make it 2-2 after one quarter of play.
McPartland gave the lead back to the Mavericks at the 13:24 mark of the second quarter. After a penalty by Saint Rose, McNally scored a man-up goal off a feed from McPartland to give Mercy a 4-2 lead with 7:57 remaining in the half. MacSpadyen and McPartland added goals at the end of the quarter to give the Mavericks a 6-2 lead at halftime.
The Golden Knights began the third quarter with two straight goals to make it 6-4 with 13 minutes remaining in the frame. Saint Rose looked to have the momentum on their side, but McNally and Chillianis answered with goals to increase the Mercy lead back to four, 8-4, after the third quarter.
The Mavericks put the game away in the fourth quarter as McPartland scored the first three goals of the period to give Mercy an 11-4 lead with 3:38 remaining. The Mavericks went on to control the action the rest of the way in picking up their third straight win.
Mercy held a 37-31 edge in shots, a 36-26 advantage in ground balls and went 11-of-21 on face-offs.
