Wilcox and McNally Record Four Points Apiece as No. 10 Men's Lacrosse Plays at No. 6 Seton Hill

(Feb. 25, 2017) – Despite a game-high-tying four points from both senior Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and graduate student Kevin McNally (Hillburn, N.Y./University at Albany), the No. 10 Mercy College men's lacrosse team suffered a 14-10 setback to No. 6 Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon at Dick's Field.
The Mavericks (3-1) drop their first game of the year, while the Griffins (1-1) earn their first victory of the year.
Wilcox ended the day with two goals and two assists, while McNally netted three goals and an assist. Sophomore Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) recorded a goal and two assists and freshman Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored two goals. Junior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) and sophomore Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also notched goals in the game. Junior Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) finished with three ground balls and a caused turnover to lead the defense. Sophomore goalie Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) played the full 60 minutes in net and made 12 saves in a losing effort.
Seton Hill was led by Adam Reimer who had three goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Merritt Bailey made ten saves to earn the victory.
Mercy faced their first ranked opponent of the season and jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 2:05 remaining in the first quarter after McPartland, Chillianis and MacSpadyen racked up goals. The Griffins got on the board at the 1:56 mark of the opening frame and headed into the second quarter down 3-1.
The second quarter saw Seton Hill open up the quarter with two straight goals to tie the game up at 3-3 with 5:36 left before halftime. McPartland netted his second goal of the game at the 2:45 mark to give the Mavericks a 4-3 lead. However, the hosts ended the half with three consecutive tallies to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Bennett Johnson opened the scoring in the third quarter at the 14:06 mark to put the Griffins up three, 7-4. After goals from McNally and Wilcox and a Seton Hill goal, the Mavericks trailed 8-6 with 8:27 left in the third stanza. The Griffins then rattled off three unanswered goals to increase their lead to 11-6 before Martinez picked up a man-up goal with 30 seconds left in the period to cut the Seton Hill lead to 11-7 after three quarters.
The home team began the final quarter with two straight goals to take their largest lead of the game at 13-7 with 9:48 remaining. Mercy continued to battle and answered with three goals in a row with McNally scoring twice and Wilcox adding another to make it 13-10 Griffins with 2:37 left. The Mavericks could not continue the run and Seton Hill scored another goal at the 1:41 mark to secure the victory.
Seton Hill held a 34-33 edge in shots, a 29-24 edge in ground balls and won 22-of-28 face-offs. Mercy went 3-of-7 on man-up opportunities and was 16-of-17 on clear attempts.
