Four Mavericks Score Multiple Goals as Women's Lacrosse Earns 11-9 Victory Over Assumption
Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. (Feb. 28, 2017) – Powered by four Mavericks recording multiple goals, the Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned an 11-9 victory over Assumption College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the second straight year, while the Greyhounds (0-1) begin their 2017 campaign with a loss.
Junior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) led the way with two goals and five assists, while sophomore Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) finished with three goals, an assist, nine draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) and junior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) added two goals apiece and graduate student Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) recorded a goal and an assist. Freshman Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) picked up her first collegiate goal, while sophomore Talia Stagnitta (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) led the defense with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) played the first half in goal and made a save to earn the win and move to 2-0.
Assumption was led by Jenny Bush and Amanda Burns who both scored twice and goalkeeper Jaclyn Chirco made nine saves in a losing effort.
In the teams' first meeting since 2014, the Greyhounds got off to a quick start as Quincy Wilkins scored just 26 seconds into the contest to give Assumption a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks rebounded and Isnardi tied the game up at 1-1 after a pass from Jehle with 26:25 left in the first half.
Mercy took the lead for the first time when Haines scored off a free position shot at the 23:22 mark before Davidson added her first of the contest at the 20:46 mark to give the Mavericks a 3-1 lead. Bush tallied a goal with 17:02 remaining in the opening half to make it 3-2, but Isnardi netted her second of the game to put Mercy up 4-2.
Assumption closed the half with two straight goals to tie the game up at 4-4 heading into halftime.
The Mavericks looked to pull away from the Greyhounds in the second half and DiFusco would help out with two goals to begin the half, giving Mercy a 6-4 lead with 23:47 remaining. Assumption answered with a goal at the 20:20 mark to get within one, 6-5, but Isnardi and Davidson followed with back-to-back goals, off assists from Jehle, to put the Mavericks ahead 8-5 with 18:07 on the clock.
Jehle and Sergio later followed with tallies to give Mercy their largest lead of the game, 10-5, with 8:56 left in the game. Assumption responded with two unanswered to get within three, 10-7, but Jehle answered with her second of the game to put the Mavericks up 11-7.
The Greyhounds added on two late goals to make it 11-9, but time would run out on their comeback attempt and Mercy escaped with the win.
The Mavericks held a 22-15 edge in shots, 19-18 advantage in ground balls and a 11-10 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks resume play on Saturday, March 4th when they play at Merrimack at 12 p.m.
