Six Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays LIU Post Down to the Wire
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2017) – Despite six Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team battled throughout before succumbing to LIU Post, 74-68, in an ECC matchup on Wednesday night at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Mavericks (3-19, 1-13 ECC) drop the season series to the Pioneers (10-13, 6-7 ECC), who remain in ECC Tournament contention with the win.
Mercy was led by freshman Abigail Collier (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) who recorded a team-high 12 points and also added five rebounds. Junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) concluded the night with 11 points and five rebounds, while junior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) ended with ten points and a team-high six rebounds. Junior Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) poured in ten points on 4-of-6 shooting and freshman Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College) netted ten points and four assists. Sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) rounded out the six Mavericks scoring in double figures with ten points and a game-high-tying seven assists.
LIU Post was led by Shannon Doyle who had a game-high 15 points and seven assists.
After a tough loss to Molloy on Saturday, the Mavericks looked to rebound and jumped out to a 10-9 lead with 4:34 remaining in the first quarter. The hosts followed with a 9-3 run to take their largest lead of the quarter, 18-13, at the 1:41 mark. A three by Wilson and a jumper from Collier to end the quarter evened the score up at 18-18 after one quarter of play.
Sullivan nailed a three and Keane-Dawes made a layup to open the second quarter, giving Mercy a 23-18 lead just under two minutes into the period. Another Keane-Dawes layup at the 5:19 mark made it a 29-20 lead for the Mavericks, capping off a 16-2 since the 1:41 mark of the first quarter. Mercy later increased the lead to a game-high 14 points, 38-24, with 1:40 left before halftime, outscoring the Pioneers 20-6 up to that point in the quarter.
LIU Post ended the second quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to six, 38-32, heading into halftime. The Mavericks shot 53.8 percent in the second stanza and received points from seven of eight players.
The Pioneers began the third quarter on an 8-2 run to tie the game up at 40-40 with 7:19 remaining in the quarter. Mercy immediately came back with three unanswered to retake the lead and held a 45-42 advantage at the 5:47 mark after a layup by Bady.
LIU Post would respond with a 9-1 run to take the lead back at 51-46 with 2:49 left in the third. The Mavericks continued to battle and concluded the frame on a 7-2 run to make it a tied game, 53-53, entering the fourth quarter.
Collier nailed a three to start the fourth, making it a 56-53 game in favor of Mercy. The Pioneers came back and took the lead for good with a 14-3 run that made it 67-59 with 4:26 remaining. The Mavericks did not quit and answered with five straight to get within three, 67-64, with 3:28 left. However, that would be the closest Mercy could get as LIU Post held on for the victory.
The Mavericks shot a season-high 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the floor, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the foul line. LIU Post shot 37.7 percent (26-of-69) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from long distance and 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the charity stripe. The Pioneers held a 46-31 edge on the boards and a 25-8 advantage in second chance points.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, February 14th when they host Roberts Wesleyan College at Westchester Community College at 5:30 p.m.
