Virginia State was led by Jahleel Sewer who went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Jacob Wells made the start on the mound and went six innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.

After splitting a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mercy looked to continue its strong play and they would open the contest with two runs in their first at bat. Mooradian led off the contest with a single and later stole second. Sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) moved him over to third with a groundout before Murphy singled Mooradian home to make it 1-0. Young later added a sacrifice fly in the inning to put the Mavericks ahead 2-0 after the top of the first.

The score remained 2-0 until the Trojans broke through with an unearned run in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1 Mercy after three innings. The Mavericks broke open the game in the fourth as they scored three runs on three hits and a Virginia State error to take a 5-1 lead. Arcabascio walked to lead off the inning and Kiesow singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Kiesow and Arcabascio would score on an error by the pitcher as freshman David Deberardinis (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) reached first. Mooradian brought home Deberardinis with an RBI single to right field to cap off the scoring in the inning.

Mercy added on another run in the top of the fifth as Kiesow drove home Young with an RBI single to make it 6-1. The Mavericks scored twice in the seventh inning as Arcabascio doubled home senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) and Young scored on a groundout to make it 8-1 Mavericks.

The Trojans plated a run in their seventh inning to make it 8-2 but the Mavericks responded with a run in the eighth inning to make it 9-2. Virginia State added their last run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, but the deficit proved too much to overcome and Mercy emerged victorious.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Virginia State at 1 p.m.
