Sadallah and Kiesow Record Three RBI as Baseball Picks Up 15-3 Victory Over Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. (Mar. 11, 2017) – Powered by three-RBI days from sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and junior Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, N.Y./Herkimer County CC), the Mercy College baseball team earned their second win a row with a 15-3 victory over Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field.

The Mavericks (4-7) have won three of their last four games, while the Trojans (8-7) have dropped three games in a row.

Sadallah went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Kiesow batted 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored an RBI and senior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J./Sussex County CC) tossed five innings with two earned runs allowed to earn the victory.

Virginia State was led by Colton Gunn who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Gerald Taylor went the first six innings with six earned runs allowed to take the loss.

The game remained scoreless after two innings before the Trojans scored first in the bottom of the third to take their only lead of the game at 1-0. Mercy's offense got on track in the fourth inning when they plated four runs on three hits and a Virginia State error to take a 4-1 lead. Fina and Mendez recorded RBI singles in the frame and Kiesow contributed an RBI groundout to finish off the scoring.

After Costa tossed a scoreless bottom of the fourth, the Mavericks added a run as Sadallah scored to make it 5-1. The Trojans responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Mercy still held a 5-2 advantage after five innings.

The Mavericks put up another four runs in the sixth inning as Kiesow singled home a run to make it 6-2. Mercy added three more runs in the frame on a flyout, double steal and groundout to take a 9-2 lead. The Mavericks continued to swing the bats well in the top of the seventh as Arcabascio brought home two runs with a double to right field before Kiesow brought another run to the plate to make it 12-2 Mercy.

Virginia State tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the score to 12-3. Sadallah scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning and added a two-RBI triple in the ninth to finish off the scoring on the day.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks look for the three-game sweep of Virginia State when they play tomorrow at 12 p.m.
