ETTRICK, Va. (Mar. 12, 2017) – Despite a combined five RBI from sophomores Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) and Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 19-10 decision to Virginia State University on Sunday afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field.

The Mavericks (4-8) fail to earn the three-game sweep, while the Trojans (9-7) snap a three-game losing streak with the win.

Murphy went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Sadallah went 5-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI. Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) batted 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI and senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Senior James Waters (Troy, N.Y./Fulton Montgomery CC) also went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Graduate student James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) made the start on the mound and tossed two innings with six earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Julian White led the Virginia State offense with a 3-for-5 day with two runs scored and five RBI. Jamar Hinton picked up the win after pitching six innings.

A high-scoring affair broke out in the final game of the three-game set with the two teams combining for 29 runs and 44 hits. After the Mavericks did not score in the top of the first, the Trojans exploded for six runs on five hits and two Mercy errors to take a 6-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Mavericks got on the board in the top of the second with four runs on three hits and a wild pitch to make it 6-4. Waters opened the scoring by coming home on a wild pitch before Sadallah singled home senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University), who had walked earlier in the inning. Murphy later drove home Sadallah and junior Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, N.Y./Herkimer County CC) on an RBI single to center field to end the scoring. The Trojans tacked on a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 7-4 after two innings.

Virginia State scored again on a wild pitch in the third inning to make it 8-4 before scoring five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth to increase their advantage to 13-4 after four innings. Waters doubled home freshman Spencer Goyette (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale), who had singled, to make it 13-5, but Virginia State immediately responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 14-5 lead after five innings.

Sadallah brought home another run in the sixth with a double to left field before Murphy singled home Sadallah in the next at bat to cut the Trojans lead to 14-7. However, Virginia State continued to swing the bats well and put up four runs in the sixth inning to put their advantage to 18-7. The Trojans added their last run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, making it 19-7.

The Mavericks put up two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, but the deficit proved too much to overcome and Virginia State was able to avoid the sweep.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 14th when they play at Nyack College at 6:30 p.m.
