DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 21, 2017) – Powered by a home run from senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) in game one, the Mercy College baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Le Moyne College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Mavericks earned a 3-1 victory in the opener before falling 13-3 in the nightcap.

The Mavericks (5-9) are 4-3 in their last seven games, while the Dolphins (12-7) have won four of their last six games.

Game 1: Mercy 3, Le Moyne 1

The opening contest of the day saw a low-scoring affair with the teams combining for just six hits and four runs. Senior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made the start on the mound for Mercy and got out of a jam in the top of the first with a double play.

The Mavericks went on to score all three of their runs in the bottom of the first as senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster County CC) brought in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0. Sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) later scored on an attempted double steal with the runner thrown out at second. Mendez concluded the scoring in the frame with a home run over the left field fence to put the Mavericks up 3-0.

Nalbone set the Dolphins down in order in the second and the combination of senior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J./Sussex County CC), graduate student James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and freshman Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) would hold Le Moyne to just an unearned run as Mercy stole a game one victory.

Sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 2-for-3, while Mendez went 1-for-3. Freshman David Deberardinis (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) batted 1-for-2 and Nalbone earned the win to improve to 2-1 after tossing two hitless innings. Finocchi pitched the seventh inning to earn the save.

Le Moyne was led by Nick Place and Josiah Gray who both went 1-for-3. Chase Borowitz went the distance with three earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Game 2: Le Moyne 13, Mercy 3

Le Moyne regrouped and scored a run in each of the first six innings in cruising to the game two victory. The Dolphins put up two runs in the top of the first on two hits and added three more in the second to take an early 5-0 lead.

The visitors added two more runs in the third to increase the lead to 7-0 and added one in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a commanding 13-0 lead. The Mavericks were held hitless until the fifth inning when Deberardinis and junior Ralph Pasols (Middletown, N.Y./Orange CC) singled. Mercy was unable to score in the fifth inning, but would plate three runs in the sixth inning. Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) led off the inning with a ground-rule double and was later brought home by a Fina RBI single to make it 13-1.

Freshman Tim Gesualdi (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) continued the rally with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring junior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy). Mendez capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout that brought Fina to the plate.

The deficit proved too much for the Mavericks to overcome and the Dolphins came away with the game two victory.

Pasols went 2-for-3 and Fina went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Gesualdi batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and Deberardinis went 1-for-3. Freshman Paul Hansut (Highland, N.Y./Highland) made the start on the bump and went two innings with three earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Le Moyne was led by JT Pittman who had three RBI, while Max Tessitore pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 24th when they host Bridgeport in their ECC opener at 12 p.m.
