Nine Different Mavericks Score as Women's Lacrosse Earns First Shutout Victory in School History Against Holy Family
Box Score CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (Mar. 23, 2017) – Led by nine different Mavericks scoring, the Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned the first shutout in program history with a 19-0 victory over Holy Family University on Thursday afternoon at The Proving Grounds.
The Mavericks (6-0) continue their best start in school history, while the Tigers (0-6) remain winless on the year.
Graduate student Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led the way with a career-high six goals and eight points, while freshman Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) netted three goals. Senior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) and junior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both finished with two goals and an assist. Junior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) produced a goal, three assists and five ground balls and sophomore Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) contributed two goals, 14 draw controls and three ground balls. Freshman Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) concluded the day with a goal and an assist and sophomore Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and freshman Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) rounded out the nine Mavericks scoring. Juniors Hope Coticchio (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Rachel Gumowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and sophomore Talia Stagnitta (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) all recorded an assist on the day. Junior goalie Shianne Judson (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) made the start in net and made two saves to earn the win and improve to 3-0. Senior Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) played the second half in goal to preserve the shutout.
Holy Family was led by Caleigh Gallagher who had eight ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Mercy looked to continue its winning ways and wasted little time in getting on the board as Isnardi scored off a feed from Jehle just 42 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead. Just 18 seconds later Haines found the back of the net with help from Davidson to make it 2-0.
Haines picked up her second of the day at the 27:56 mark of the first half, making it 3-0. Davidson and Sergio netted their first goals to put the Mavericks up 5-0 less than five minutes into the game. Haines scored two more times in the half with a goal from Sanchez sandwiched in between to give Mercy an 8-0 advantage with 22:26 remaining in the opening half. DiFusco, Jehle, Spinazzola and Sanchez concluded the scoring in the half to put the Mavericks up 12-0 at halftime.
The second half saw Haines score two more times in the first six minutes of the half with DiFusco adding her second after the first Haines goal of the stanza, making it 15-0. Isnardi, Sanchez, Mackie and Davidson concluded the scoring on the day to help seal the convincing win on the road.
Mercy held a 33-3 edge in shots, a 27-19 edge in ground balls and a 17-4 advantage in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks look to improve to 7-0 when they play at Queens in their ECC opener on Saturday, March 25th at 3 p.m.
