DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2017) – Despite three different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College baseball team dropped 7-3 and 4-1 decisions to the University of Bridgeport in an ECC doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-11, 0-2 ECC) have now dropped three in a row, while the Purple Knights (7-7, 2-0 ECC) improve to .500 on the year.

Game 1: Bridgeport 7, Mercy 3

The opening game of the series was a back-and-forth battle between the Purple Knights and the Mavericks. Bridgeport was the first to get on the board when Dave Egeland was able to make it home off of a dropped fly ball from the Mavericks. Mercy was quick to respond, as junior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) singled up the middle in the bottom of the second, bringing senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y./Ulster CC) home to tie the score 1-1 entering the third inning.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the fourth when Mercy was able to record two more runs in the contest. A double from senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) would bring sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) home before senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) drilled a double to bring Mendez home, increasing the score to 3-1 with Mercy in the lead.

Bridgeport Chris Triano opened up the scoring in the top of the fifth after he blasted a two-run home run to left field to tie the game 3-3. The Mavericks struggled to get back on the board in the remainder of the contest, as the Purple Knights were able to score four more runs to take game one 7-3.

Young went 2-for-2 with one RBI, while Mendez went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) recorded two stolen bases, while senior Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./Islip) threw the first seven innings and struck out six batters.

Game 2: Bridgeport 4, Mercy 1

The nightcap saw a pitcher's duel breakout between senior Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J./Sussex County CC) and Bridgeport starter Denis Lyman. After both pitchers tossed a scoreless first inning, the Purple Knights took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on two hits and a Mercy error.

The contest stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Mavericks plated an unearned run after Mendez hit one that the first baseman misplayed, leading to junior Ralph Pasols (Middletown, N.Y./Orange CC) scoring. Mooradian looked to be the tying run but was thrown out at home after the error by the first baseman.

Bridgeport added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Dylan Steigerwald hit a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1. Mercy went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, while Mendez, Arcabascio and junior Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, N.Y./Herkimer County CC) went 1-for-3. Costa went the distance with three earned runs allowed in seven innings.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow hosting Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
