McPartland Scores Game-High Three Goals as No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Earns 11-5 Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 25, 2017) – Powered by a game-high three goals from freshman Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 12 Mercy College men's lacrosse team picked up an 11-5 victory over Roberts Wesleyan in ECC action on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-2, 2-0 ECC) pick up their second straight win, while the Redhawks (4-4, 1-2 ECC) fall below .500 in ECC play.
McPartland also added an assist and four ground balls, while sophomore Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) posted two goals and three assists. Graduate student Kevin McNally (Hillburn, N.Y./SUNY Albany) finished with two goals and an assist and junior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) dished out three assists. Also, scoring for the Mavericks were seniors Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), sophomore Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and freshman John McMahon (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon). Sophomore Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 11-of-19 in the faceoff circle and had a team-high six ground balls. Sophomore Luke Baron (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) had five ground balls and junior Christian Gebhardt (West Islip, N.Y./Nassau CC) forced two turnovers. Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made four saves in the opening 50:26 minutes of action to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Cody Menzies who had two goals and an assist, while Alex Bianchi added a pair of goals. Goalie Keith Keehn made 13 saves in a losing effort.
Mercy wasted little time in scoring as McPartland scored just 53 seconds in to give the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead. The Redhawks responded by tying the game up at 1-1 with 11:01 left in the first quarter on a Cody Menzies goal. However, McNally and McMahon finished the quarter with back-to-back goals to put Mercy ahead 3-1 after one quarter.
McPartland and MacSpadyen began the second quarter with goals to make it 5-1 with 9:38 remaining in the half. Bianchi got on the board for Roberts Wesleyan to make it a 5-2 game with just over five minutes on the clock. McPartland and Speicher closed out the period with goals to give Mercy a 7-2 lead at halftime.
The Mavericks went on to dominate the third quarter as they outscored the visitors 4-0 to take an 11-2 lead after three quarters of play. MacSpadyen started the scoring before Chillianis, McNally and Wilcox followed with goals to conclude the scoring on the day.
The Redhawks added three goals in the fourth, but Mercy had the game well in hand in taking their second straight ECC contest.
Mercy held a 42-26 edge in shots, a 33-30 edge in ground balls and won 11-of-19 face-offs.
