Jehle Records Game-High Seven Points as RV/No. 16 Women's Lacrosse Picks Up 17-1 Victory Over Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 25, 2017) – Powered by a game-high seven points from junior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead), the RV/No. 16 Mercy College women's lacrosse team posted a 17-1 win over Queens College in their ECC opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (7-0, 1-0 ECC) continue their best start in school history, while the Knights (0-4, 0-1 ECC) remain winless on the year. The seven-game winning streak is the longest in program history surpassing the previous mark of six games that was set last season.
Jehle posted two goals and a game-high five assists, while sophomore Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) recorded three goals, an assist and seven draw controls. Freshman Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) finished with three goals and junior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) added a goal and four assists. Graduate student Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) netted two goals and an assist and senior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) ended up with a goal and an assist. Also scoring were junior Rachel Gumowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), sophomore Talia Stagnitta (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and freshmen Samantha Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), Senna Tadfie (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North). Junior Hope Coticchio (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) helped lead the defense with a team-high two caused turnovers. Junior goalie Shianne Judson (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) made the start in goal and played the first half with one save to earn the victory. Senior Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) played the second half and made four saves to help secure the win.
Queens was led by Nicole Moniello who recorded a goal. Goalie Basma Attieh played the first half in net and made five saves in a losing effort.
After shutting out Holy Family in their last game on Thursday, the Mavericks cruised to another victory as Haines opened up the scoring at the 29:19 mark. The Knights immediately responded with a goal of their own to make it 1-1 and looked to be in for the game. However, Sanchez, Stagnitta, Jehle and DiFusco answered with four straight goals in a span of just over three minutes to take a 5-1 lead.
Davidson got involved in the scoring at the 21:24 mark to increase the Mercy lead to 6-1. Sanchez followed with two of the next three goals with Jehle scoring in between the two from Sanchez, making it 9-1 with 16:34 remaining in the half.
The Mavericks added five more goals in the half to put the game out of reach as Isnardi, Shelton, Haines, Gumowski and Sergio found the back of the net to make it 14-1 at halftime.
Isnardi added two goals in the second half and Tadfie netted her first collegiate goal to end the scoring on the day as Mercy cruised in the second half to their seventh straight win.
Mercy outshot Queens 31-8, held a 9-7 advantage in ground balls and a 12-2 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks look to make it eight wins in a row when they host Caldwell on March 27th at 4 p.m.
