Three Mavericks Record Multiple Hits as Baseball Hosts Bridgeport
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 25, 2017) - Despite a team-high two hits from freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y. / Marlboro) and sophomores Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y. / Tottenville) and Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 13-5 decision to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-12, 0-3 ECC) fail to gain a conference win against the Purple Knights (8-7, 3-0 ECC).
Mooradian went 2-for-4 with one run scored, while Sadallah went 2-for-5 with one run scored. Murphy went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y. / Ulster County CC) and juniors Dee Boyles (Sidney, N.Y. / Fulton Montgomery CC) and John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) all recorded one hit for the Mavericks. Graduate student James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) made the start on the mound and went the first three innings with four earned runs and two strikeouts to take the loss.
Bridgeport was paced by Matt Van Riper who threw for a total of seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out four batters.
Mercy fell behind early and could not recover in game three of the four-game set against the Purple Knights. Bridgeport plated their first run of the game off of a sacrifice fly RBI from Zach Burger, bringing Cam Overbaugh home to put the Purple Knights on the board. In the next at bat, Dylan Steigerwald was able to increase the lead to 2-0 off of a dropped fly ball in the field.
The Mavericks were unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities in the bottom of the first, putting Bridgeport back in the batter's box. It would be Mooradian who made all three outs for the Mavericks in the top of the second inning to hold the Purple Knights lead to 2-0.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Casey McCone singled up the middle to bring Chris Triano home, increasing the Bridgeport lead to 3-0. One hit and two RBI from the Purple Knights in the top of the fourth inning would improve the score to 5-0.
It was the sixth inning for Bridgeport that earned them the win, recording six of their 13 runs scored in that inning. The Mavericks scored two unearned runs in the sixth, making the score 11-2 in the top of the seventh.
The Purple Knights had one last scoring run in the top of the eighth inning when they were able to score two runs off of two RBI from Overbaugh and Dylan Steigerwald. The eighth inning came to a close with the Mavericks trailing 13-2.
Despite three runs scored in the bottom of the ninth inning from the Mavericks, the deficit proved too much to overcome and the Purple Knights emerged victorious. Murphy recorded a two-RBI triple in the inning to help lead the scoring in the inning, but Mercy's rally would come up short.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow, Sunday, March 26th when they host the Purple Knights in the final game of the four game series at 12 p.m.
