WILMINGTON, DEL. (Mar. 26, 2017) – Powered by two home runs from freshman Kendall Meeks (Guysville, Ohio / Alexander), the Mercy College softball team earned a sweep of Goldey-Beacom College with 8-0 and 9-2 victories on Sunday afternoon at Jackson Athletic Complex.

The Mavericks improve to 6-2 overall, while the Lightning fall to 4-10 on the year.

Game 1: Mercy 8, Goldey-Beacom 0 (5 Innings)

The Mavericks wasted no time taking control of game one against Goldey-Beacom. A precise performance from the Mercy field in the first inning would make three quick outs in order to get the Mavericks at the plate. The Mavericks earned a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J. / Middletown North) doubled to left center field, allowing junior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and senior Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) to score for the Mavericks.

A sacrifice fly from Wade in the bottom of the second would increase the Mavericks lead to 3-0 when Meeks scored. Two outs from junior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif. / Southwestern CC) at second base and a batter struck out from sophomore McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe) would result in another 1-2-3 inning from the Mavericks in the top of the third. Meeks continued her stellar performance of game one when she blasted a two-run home run to left center field, giving the Mavericks a 5-0 lead after three innings.

The Mavericks put the game away in the bottom of the fourth inning, when they were able to score three runs off of three hits. A single from freshman Jessica Lombardi (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Cliffside Park) and multiple errors from the Lightning field would allow for Lemus to score. With Lombardi still on base, Lloyd took advantage of the situation and tripled to right center field, bringing Lombardi home. The final run of the game was scored off of a Gross sacrifice fly, bringing Lloyd home and eventually earning the 8-0 victory for game one.

Meeks went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Gross went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Lloyd batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Cusumano threw five innings for the Mavericks and struck out three batters. For the Lightning, Paulynn Mao threw four innings and struck out one batter for the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 9, Goldey-Beacom 2

The Lightning were able to record seven hits in the second game, but were only able to plate two runs in the loss. The Mavericks produced nine runs on 13 hits and three Lightning errors.

The Mavericks had an explosive first inning in game two, recording six of their nine runs in the contest, with two of those coming from a second Meeks home run on the day. Mercy closed the first inning recording six runs on six hits and one Goldey-Beacom error.

The Lightning were able to get on the board in the bottom of the second, when an RBI from Kylie Quirk brought Autumn Hollis home to increase the score to 6-1. Goldey-Beacom continued to fight as they were able to record their second run of the game in the bottom of the third when Rachel Davis singled up the middle to allow Shelby Murphy to make it a 6-2 game.

The Mavericks eventually earned the sweep in the fifth inning of game two when they were able to score the final three runs of the game off of three hits and one Lightning error.

Meeks went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored and Gross went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and freshman Hannah Howery (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Freshman Alexis Carmichael (Allen, Texas/Allen) made the start in the circle and went the first two innings to earn the win.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday, March 28th as they host Queens College in their next ECC doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm.
