Deberardinis Tosses Complete Game as Baseball Records 7-3 Victory Over Bridgeport
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2017) – Led by a complete game on the mound from freshman David Deberardinis (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) and two RBI from senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Quinnipiac University) and junior Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, N.Y./Herkimer County CC), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 7-3 victory over ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-12, 1-3 ECC) pick up their first ECC win of the season, while the Purple Knights (8-8, 3-1 ECC) pick up their first ECC loss of the season.
Deberardinis allowed no earned runs and struck out four to pick up his first collegiate win, while Kiesow went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Arcabascio went 1-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y./Coppin State University) batted 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and junior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Bridgeport was led by Zach Burger who went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Dave Egeland made the start on the mound and went 7 2/3 innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.
After two scoreless innings, the Mavericks got on the board first in the third inning as Sadallah singled home Kiesow who led off the inning with a single, making it 1-0. Deberardinis continued to pitch a shutout until the fifth inning when Burger smacked a two-RBI single to right field that put the Purple Knights up 2-1.
Mercy went down in order in the sixth inning, but Bridgeport added onto their lead as Cam Overbaugh doubled home Casey Ouellette to give the Purple Knights a 3-1 lead after six innings.
The Mavericks looked to be on the verge of getting swept, but Kiesow started the comeback in the seventh inning when he doubled to left center, scoring Mendez from first to make it 3-2. Deberardinis escaped a runners on second and third base jam in the bottom half of the inning to set up Mercy's big inning in the eighth.
The first run of the frame came on a Mendez walk that evened the score up at 3-3. Young followed with an RBI single that gave the Mavericks a 4-3 lead. Arcabascio delivered another blow to the Purple Knights as he followed with a two-RBI single to left field, making it 6-3. Kiesow produced the final run of the game with an RBI single that scored Young to give Mercy a 7-3 lead.
Deberardinis continued to deal and tossed two perfect innings to secure the win for the Mavericks.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 28th when they host Nyack at 3 p.m.
