DeVito's Game-Winning Goal Gives No. 12 Men's Lacrosse an 8-7 Overtime Victory at Chestnut Hill

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. (Mar. 29, 2017) – Led by the game-winning goal 19 seconds into overtime from freshman Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), the No. 12 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned an 8-7 overtime victory at Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (7-2, 3-0 ECC) have now won three games in a row and win at Chestnut Hill (3-3, 2-1 ECC) for the first time since 2011.

DeVito also recorded four ground balls, while sophomore Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) scored a game-high four goals. Sophomore Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) added a goal and two assists and seniors Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) also scored. Junior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) and freshman Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) netted assists and freshman Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) had a team-high five ground balls and went 8-of-13 on face-offs. Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 11 saves to pick up the win in goal.

Chestnut Hill received three goals from Tanner Fisher and Thomas McDermott made ten saves in a losing effort.

The Griffins came out and took an early lead as Rees Carson got Chestnut Hill on the board at the 13:33 mark to make it 1-0. The Mavericks responded by closing out the first quarter with two goals as Speicher and Chillianis scored to put Mercy ahead 2-1 after one quarter of play.

Chestnut Hill began the second quarter with two straight goals to retake the lead at 3-2 with 12:27 remaining in the half. Chillianis answered with his second of the day to knot the score up at 3-3. Fisher scored for the Griffins and MacSpadyen scored for the Mavericks to bring the score to 4-4 with 2:49 on the clock. Fisher netted his second of the game with 22 seconds left in the half to give Chestnut Hill a 5-4 halftime lead.

The Griffins looked to build off the momentum from the late goal in the second quarter, but it was Mercy who would show why they are among the nation's best teams as they outscored Chestnut Hill 3-0 in the third quarter to take a 7-5 lead. Chillianis began the scoring with a goal just 33 seconds into the period and was followed by a goal from Wilcox before scoring again at the 7:22 mark to give the Mavericks a two-goal lead after three quarters.

Mercy looked to finish the Griffins off in the fourth quarter, but Chestnut Hill rallied and scored twice in the frame to tie the game up at 7-7 after regulation, forcing overtime. In the overtime period Rey would win the faceoff and 19 seconds later DeVito found the back of the net to give the Mavericks their first win at Chestnut Hill since 2011.

Mercy held a 31-27 edge in shots, a 31-23 advantage in ground balls and won 9-of-18 face-offs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, April 2nd when they host Molloy at 1 p.m.
