Seven Different Mavericks Score as Women's Lacrosse Earns Convincing 15-4 Victory Over Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Mar. 5, 2017) – Powered by seven different Mavericks finding the back of the net, the Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a convincing 15-4 victory over Merrimack College on Sunday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field.

The Mavericks (3-0) remain unbeaten and start 3-0 for the second straight year, while the Warriors (0-2) remain winless on the year.

Freshman Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) led the way with a game-high six points on four goals and two assists, while graduate student Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) produced two goals and three assists. Junior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) recorded her 100th career point in the contest and ended the day with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) finished with three goals, six ground balls and 11 draw controls, while junior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) posted a goal and two assists. Senior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) and freshman Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) also tallied goals to round out the scoring. Junior goalie Shianne Judson (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) played the full 60 minutes in goal and made seven saves to earn the win.

Merrimack was led by Annette Ruggiero who scored a team-high two goals. Alexa Petzold played 25:21 minutes of action in goal and made one save in a losing effort.

Mercy looked to continue its strong play against the Warriors and would score just 36 seconds into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Sanchez fed Isnardi after Isnardi had won the opening draw control to give the Mavericks an early lead. Just under a minute later Sergio scored on a free position shot that put Mercy up 2-0 less than two minutes into the game.

Isnardi picked up her second goal of the game at the 25:09 mark to put the Mavericks up 3-0 before Sanchez netted her first of the contest to make it 4-0 with 24:32 remaining in first half. Merrimack ended the Mercy run with a tally at the 20:47 mark, making it 4-1.

The Warriors looked to try and get back in the game, but the Mavericks had other plans as Davidson responded with a goal at the 16:30 mark, off an assist from Haines, that put the lead back to four, 5-1. Sanchez and Jehle later added back-to-back goals to increase the Mercy advantage to 7-1 with 13:32 left in the opening stanza.

The Mavericks continued to pour it on as Sanchez and Davidson scored again to make it 9-1 Mercy with 1:50 remaining before halftime. The Warriors scored off a free position shot with 15 seconds on the clock, but the Mavericks held a 9-2 halftime lead.

Mercy continued to dominate in the second half as DiFusco got on the board with 25:26 remaining to increase the advantage to 10-2. Isnardi, Haines and Sanchez later followed with tallies to make it 13-2 with just over 17 minutes left. Merrimack followed with two straight goals, but Haines and Davidson delivered the knockout punch with goals to put the game away and give the Mavericks a 3-0 start.

Mercy held a 24-14 edge in shots and a 14-7 edge in draw controls, while Merrimack held an 18-15 edge in ground balls.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks look to make it four wins in a row when they host Georgian Court on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
