Arcabascio and Murphy Record Multiple RBI and Patterson Earns Win as Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split With USciences

Box Score 2 FISHKILL, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2017) – Powered by two RBI from senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Quinnipiac University) and sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) and a win from graduate student James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) , the Mercy College baseball team split a doubleheader against University of the Sciences at Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Mavericks took game one 6-3 before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.
The Mavericks are now 2-7 overall, while the Devils are 3-7 overall.
Game 1: Mercy 6, USciences 3
The opening game of the day saw sophomore Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y. / Tottenville) take control of the plate as he recorded three hits, two runs scored, and one RBI as the Mavericks took game one in the doubleheader, 6-3. The Mavericks had an explosive first inning at the plate, recording four of their six earned runs. Freshman John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y. / Marlboro) was able to get on base first for the Mavericks after nailing a single through the right side and stealing second base. Sadallah brought Mooradian home when he blasted a triple to left center to get the Mavericks on the board. Murphy stepped to the plate next and recorded another triple for the Mavericks bringing Sadallah home to put the Mavericks up 2-0 with no outs. An RBI from senior Randal Mendez in the next at bat brought Murphy home. Arcabascio brought in the final run of the inning when he singled through the right side to bring junior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) home. The Mavericks ended the first inning with a 4-0 lead over the Devils.
The Devils were able to get on the board in the top of the second inning when Matt Miniconzi was able to bring Mike Pollastrelli home. The next scoring would take place in the bottom of the third inning when Arcabascio recorded his second RBI of the game with two outs to bring senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y. / Coppin State University) home, increasing the Maverick lead to 5-1. The Mavericks held the Devils to just one run in the top of the fourth when they were able to successfully execute a double play to get them back to the plate.
Mercy would score their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Murphy smacked a double to right field, bringing Sadallah home to score the sixth run of the game for the Mavericks.
The Devils fought back in the top of the sixth inning when Justin Skinner singled to right field to allow Pat Hiester to score. USciences was able to score one more run in the top of the seventh when T.J Dezzi scored off of a single from teammate Pollastrelli. Mercy eventually took the game 6-3.
Patterson threw six innings, striking out three batters to pick up the win and improve to 1-1. For the Devils, Reilly Degen threw 3.1 innings allowing six runs for the loss.
Game 2: USciences 6, Mercy 4 (8 Innings)
The nightcap saw the Devils jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second following a fielding error on the Mavericks. Mercy was able to answer back as senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y. / Ulster Community College) scored off of an RBI from senior James Waters (Troy, N.Y. / Fulton Montgomery CC) with two outs in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 2-1. The Devils responded the following inning when Ryan Scholey scored off of a single to left center field from Pollastrelli, increasing their lead to 3-1.
The fourth inning would remain scoreless from both teams, followed by an attacking two innings from the Mavericks in the fifth and sixth innings to get them back in the game. Junior Dee Boyles (Sidney, N.Y./Fulton Montgomery CC) brought the Devils lead to just one when he was able to score after a throwing error by USciences. The Mavericks defense kept the top of the fifth inning scoreless for the Devils and allowed Mercy to stay in the ball game. Mercy would force extra innings after they were able to tie the score at 3-3 after a single from Boyles brought junior Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, N.Y. / Herkimer County CC) home.
The Mavericks would eventually fall to the Devils in the eighth inning, after USciences was able to put three runs on the board to earn the win. The Mavericks fell 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Kiesow went 2-of-4 in the nightcap, while Young threw five innings, striking out two batters to take the loss. Kris Morgenweck tossed 5.1 innings for the Devils, striking out two batters.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, Mar. 10 as they travel to Virginia State for a three game series.
