Haines Records Game-High Seven Points as No. 13/17 Women's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten With 19-8 Victory Over Millersville

(Apr. 1, 2017) – Powered by a game-high seven points from graduate student Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the No. 13/17 Mercy College women's lacrosse team remained undefeated on the year with an impressive 19-8 victory over Millersville University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (9-0) continue the best start in program history and are 14-1 in their last 15 home games, while the Marauders (5-4) have dropped four of their last five games.
Haines finished with five goals and two assists and recorded her 100th career point in the process, becoming the eighth Maverick in program history to achieve the mark. Sophomore Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) produced three goals, an assist, four ground balls and eight draw controls. Junior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) netted two goals and three assists and senior Tori DiFusco (Mahopac, N.Y./SUNY Cortland) added three goals. Junior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) recorded two goals and an assist and freshman Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) scored twice. Freshmen Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) and Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) rounded out the Mavericks who scored on the day. Sophomore Talia Stagnitta (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) led the defense with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Junior Shianne Judson (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) made the start in net and went the first 24:44 before giving way to senior Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) who played the remainder of the contest and made four saves to earn the win.
Millersville was led by Sabrina Fusco who had a team-high two goals and two assists. Bryanna Weston-Wyatt made the start in net and played 24:52 with five saves to take the loss.
Mercy once again got off to their customary strong start and did not look back in extending their win streak to nine games. DiFusco got the scoring started with back-to-back goals to make it 2-0 at the 26:41 mark. Haines extended the lead to 3-0 with a free position goal with 23:38 remaining in the opening half.
Millersville answered with two straight goals to cut the deficit to one, 3-2, at the 20:36 mark. However, Jehle and Haines responded with back-to-back goals to increase the lead back to three, 5-2, with 19 minutes left in the half. Millersville got back within two, 5-3, after a Sarah Leverentz free position goal, but the Mavericks followed with four straight goals as DiFusco, Haines, Sanchez and Mackie found the back of the net to make it 9-3 with 8:59 remaining in the half.
Taylor Davis answered with a free position goal to make it 9-4 but Mercy again followed with four unanswered goals to increase the lead to 13-4 with 2:17 left in the first half. Davidson scored twice and Isnardi and Sergio both added goals to give the Mavericks their largest lead of the first half.
The teams traded goals in the final 49 seconds as Fusco scored for Millersville and Isnardi scored for Mercy to bring the halftime score to 14-5 with the Mavericks ahead.
Mercy picked up right where they left off in the second half as Haines scored twice to begin the half, making it 16-5 with 22:29 remaining. Davis scored again to bring the score to 16-6, but Jehle and Sergio netted goals to give the Mavericks their largest lead of the game 18-6 with 11:17 left to play. Mercy cruised the rest of the way in securing a convincing win once again.
Mercy held a 39-19 edge in shots, a 19-15 edge in ground balls and a 16-13 advantage in draw controls.
